During the first Ceremony, the process of Naming is explained. How does it happen? How are the names chosen? And what is a “replacement child”?

During the Naming Ceremony, each newchild is assigned a name and placed into a family unit. Names are chosen by the Committee of Elders and are usually meaningful to the community. A replacement child is a child given the same name as one who previously died unexpectedly. For example, when a baby named Caleb drowned, another newborn was later named Caleb as a way to emotionally "replace" the lost one, though in a symbolic and ritualized manner. This shows how the community values uniformity and control over emotions.

What Assignments are mentioned during the Ceremony of Twelve? What aspects called your attention? What happens when it’s time to announce Jonas’s Assignment?

During the Ceremony of Twelve, children are assigned their lifelong jobs based on their personalities and skills, which are observed by the Elders. Some Assignments include Birthmother, Caretaker of the Old, and Instructor. What’s most striking is the precision and control of the process. When it's Jonas’s turn, he is skipped, which shocks everyone. Later, it’s revealed that he was not forgotten, he was selected, not assigned, to be the next Receiver of Memory, which is a very rare and important role.

What are the necessary qualities to become a “Receiver of Memory”? Why are they a necessity? And, in your opinion, what does this Assignment entail?

The necessary qualities to become a Receiver of Memory are: intelligence, integrity, courage, wisdom, and the Capacity to See Beyond. These qualities are vital because the Receiver must carry the collective memories of the past both joyful and painful ones and guide the community’s decisions wisely. In my opinion, this Assignment means Jonas will live isolated from his peers, experience emotions that others cannot, and bear heavy emotional burdens for the sake of society's stability.

What are Jonas’ instructions after receiving his Assignment? Do they change his perception about the Community? Explain.

Jonas receives a set of strange and strict rules: he must go immediately to training after school, he may not discuss his training, he can lie, and he is not allowed to ask for medication for pain related to training. These instructions disturb him, especially the permission to lie. As he starts receiving memories of pain, war, love, and color his perception of the community changes completely. He realizes how much is being hidden from the citizens and how their lives are emotionally shallow. He becomes aware of the importance of emotions and choices, which the community has sacrificed for the sake of "Sameness."

In your opinion, why is there only one “Receiver of Memory”? And what happens during Jonas’ first day in this Assignment? Describe the setting, the emotions, and anything else you consider of relevance.

There is only one Receiver of Memory because the community believes only one person should carry the burden of past memories, avoiding disruption to the emotionally controlled society. On Jonas's first day, he meets The Giver, an old man with a wise and gentle presence. The setting is different from other places it has books, real furniture, and warmth. Jonas is nervous and curious. He receives his first memory: the feeling of sliding down a snowy hill. He is thrilled by the sensation of cold and excitement, which are completely new to him. This moment marks the beginning of his transformation.

After watching the video: “Why do you think people would want The Giver to be banished?

People might want The Giver to be banished because he holds dangerous truths about the world that others are not ready to accept. He contains memories of war, suffering, death, but also love, joy, and freedom things the community has erased to maintain control and peace. If these memories were released to the public, it could lead to emotional chaos and challenge the very foundation of their society. The Giver represents truth and truth is often uncomfortable in a world that runs on illusion and obedience.
