William Kamkwamba was cheated out of having superpowers. Since he wanted to become stronger so that other older kids wouldn't pick on him, he asked Shabani the nephew of one of the strongest people in the town of Wimbe. To give him some mangolomera (a type of magic that delivered superhuman strength). He did give it to him, but for a high price and then told him to wait for a couple days before using it. He then decided to try it 3 days later at a soccer match. He got beaten up in the process. He confronted Shabani about it, but he just blamed William for not following his instructions. Shabani just wanted the money so he tricked William. This was when William began to realize that magic didn't rule the world.

This year was a hard one for a harvest. Since the government always made sure the fertilizer cost less so even the poor families could get some for their crops to have food for the rest of the year there wouldn't be any problems. But ever since the new government was elected they made the fertilizer price way to high so only a handful of people actually bought fertilizer. Although that didn't even matter because the first month of December was pouring rain like a tsunami, but after the flood they had serious drought for months. So by the end of May when it came time to harvest the crops there were none because they all scorched up due to the sun shining everyday. Tough times came and soon enough William would realize the true consequences of that.

That late September they found the consequences of there harvest. It first started off with people just not having enough food so they would try and find jobs for money to buy food. But soon it became a huge problem for the whole town. Soon enough people would go days without eating. It was a town wide famine. This hit Williams family too they just started off with having no breakfast then to having no lunch too. Then they were just eating one meal a day and though they didn't have much food for their one meal a day. So they took a gamble of using the remaining flour they had left and made it into cakes to sell for money. It worked in their favor because with the extra money they could buy more food for a few more weeks. So they would just repeat this process over and over until they would slowly wait for the next harvest.

As the famine kept ongoing in the town of Wimbe some great news appeared to William. His test results were going to be announced so he would see which middle school he would go to. The ones he hoped he would get into he didn't get in, but instead he got into Kachokolo. It wasn't as great as the other ones, but it was still better than not going to school. The past few months at school were great, but then the principle said that the deadline for fees was over and in late February almost half the students dropped out because they didn't have the money including William.

The famine kept getting worse and worse to the point where most of the city was being left hungry. This took its on Khamba Williams dog. He was so skinny you practically count his ribs. One day when Williams cousin Charity came over he suggested that we should just the dog out of his misery. William was against this idea if only Khamba could hold on for a few more months they would have food again. But his cousin said they would do it tomorrow. William then weighed out all his options and decided the best option was put Khamba out of his misery. As much as it pained for William to let Khamba go he had to do the right thing. So that same morning they walked Khamba to a tree tied him up and left him out there. With one last look William left him. When they came back the next morning Khamba already died. They buried him under the tree and left. William felt sad and the guilt that he was the one to kill Khamba would stay in his heart forever.

Soon after William buried his dog lots of people started to die from diseases even his cousin Geoffrey was affected. Although soon enough the corn would be ready in time to eat. William predicted 20 days at least and then the could eat again. For the last couple of days William and Geoffrey would go around the maize crops and squeeze the corn if it would break then it wasn't ready if it was firm then they were ready to cook. By the time the the 20 days were over there were lots of firm corn. So William and Geoffrey collected about thirty pieces that evening and started to cook them. After everyone ate it was like all the life came back to everyone. The food even helped cure Geoffrey's illness.

As most of the the crops began to grow the famine was slowly disappearing and so most of the kids could go back to school. Everyone except William because they still didn't have enough money to pay for the fees. With little farming to do he had more free time on his hands, but what could he do with all that free time. He decided to spend it at the library that recently opened up at his elementary school. He wasn't expecting much other than kid books, but to his surprise they had a lot of interesting books. Including science books they were mostly written in English, but he decided to read them because he loved science. This is how he began to learn English as well. So after the semester was over in school his friend Gilbert also joined him in the library. They read ton of books and William absorbed all the knowledge from the books as he could until he stumbled upon a book that had windmills on the cover.

He read on how to properly use energy and convert it with the wind. So just to test the theory out he wanted to build a small windmill. Since he didn't have all the necessary items to build his windmill he hand to improvise. He gathered various things from all over the town of Wimbe from his mothers kitchen to the garbage cans outside. But once he did find all the needed items he began to build and after he built it he decided to try in on his cousin Geoffrey's favourite little radio that he listened to while working in the fields. Once the wind blew the little radio produced sound which meant that his experiment worked. Now all he had to do was just build a bigger model.

So after he successfully built the smaller model of the windmill he had more confidence that he could build one. Even though people told him that he couldn't and that this was no job for a child he still believed ho could. So he set out to find the parts he needed to build the windmill. He thought where could he find the right items and he remembered that by his middle school there was a junk yard that had all sort of different things from old cars, to pipes, and rubber. So for the last month he woke up early to find all the pieces he need to build his windmill. Soon enough he had all the pieces and with staring out into the horizon he could start building.
