It has been almost four years since I started teaching Koreyano 10. I started learning Korean formally in 2013, when I enlisted Koreyano 10 (age reveal yarn). I became a Super Junior fan in 2009 and this had been my motivation in learning Korean. Although now it has changed to teaching Korean to students like you! I hope everyone enjoys the class and participate actively <3 Questions are always welcome so do not be afraid and ask away. Here is a pic of me with the Beyond the Story (BTS 10-year anniversary memoir) which I co-translated in Filipino :)

Hi! I am Jenny Rose Veloria, a 2nd Year BA Communication Research student. I enlisted Koreyano 10 because I have always been interested in learning hangul formally and I could say that it is because of my love for Kpop but it is actually more than that. Learning a new language has always been fun for me and I really do love to learn as many as I can.

Moreover, I started loving Kpop in 2016 when I became a fan of BTS but I am more into (say the name!) SEVENTEEN since 2021 up to today. My favorite Kdrama is Our Beloved Summer, I always ALWAYS rewatch this when I have time.

I think my expectation for this class is very simple as I just expect myself to enjoy this class as it is connected to my interests.

To conclude this, I would just like to let myself be more free, happier, and less pressured this semester without being too careless.

The image attached here is me when I attended Soobin's (TXT) cupsleeve event.

Since I became a fan of EXO in 2013, I've harbored a keen interest in Korean culture. This led me to independently start learning hangeul in 2017. However, I've hit a plateau and can only read and write hangeul at the moment. That's why I decided to enroll in this class; I believe it will help me understand and make conversations using hangeul. Hopefully, by the end of the semester, I'll be able to watch K-dramas without relying on subtitles. Some of my favorite K-dramas include Scarlet Heart (still eagerly awaiting a season 2), Business Proposal, King the Land, Destined with You, Dr. Romantic (an all-time favorite), and My Demon, which I recently added to my "favorites" list. And that's just a SOME of them. For me, watching K-dramas serves as a relaxing escape when life gets overwhelming. For this sem, what I want to tell myself is "Kakayanin mo pa rin ✊".

The collage I've included showcases two memorable events for me: my first-ever EXO-SC fanmeet experience in Manila, where I finally saw my bias after a decade of being a fan-girl, and the Asia Artist Award 2023, where I witnessed Melai's hilarious jokes and performances by various K-pop groups.

After several rounds of trying, this time around, I was lucky enough to be able to secure a slot for Koreyano 10 as my free elective. Ever since I first got into K-Pop, I have always been interested in learning more about the Korean language. After years of listening to K-Pop and watching my fair share of K-Dramas, I've picked up a thing or two. I am hoping that this class will allow me to build upon whatever knowledge I've managed to acquire throughout the years.

Recently, I've enjoyed Le Sserafim's music. As for K-Dramas, some notable ones that I've seen include Witch at Court, 18 Again, and The Good Bad Mother. My favorite Korean film has to be The Handmaiden.

As for our class, I've been told to expect lots of recitation as well as worksheets. Amidst all this, I think it is imperative for me to remember that making mistakes is a natural part of learning a language, and that I shouldn't be afraid to make them.

Hi everyone! My name is Jeorjia Austria. You can call me Jeorjia. My pronouns are she/her.

My interest in the Korean language started in high school when my friends and I became obsessed with Got7. My main motivation for learning the language is being able to watch Kdramas while doing other tasks like chores. I also want to learn how to speak basic Korean because the elderly Korean owner of a Korean grocery store I always go to seems to think I understand Korean. I want to be able to speak to him aside from laughing and saying thank you.

I realized through my required foreign language electives that I love learning languages. Enlisting in Koreyano 10 aligns with all my current interests and hobbies so I am hopeful that this will be a fun class.

I am not so active in stanning Kpop now but I still love watching dramas. My all time favorite dramas are Scarlet Heart, My Mister, and Strong Woman Do Bong Soon. Recently, I watched the masterpiece that is Anna (I even subscribed to Amazon Prime for this). I also love Sundubu Jjigae. I have that for dinner at least once a month. Lastly, I love skincare. I got into Korean skincare and it has done wonders for my skin. Right now, I love my Beauty of Joseon Cleansing Oil.

I hope this class will be forgiving to beginners and that there will be lots of opportunities to practice speaking. I want to tell myself that I'm proud of me! It's hopefully my last semester in college so I am very excited to be able to enlist in the classes that I want and I'm proud of how far I've come.

Some of my favorite Korean dramas and films are:

K-Dramas: Moving, Dr. Romantic, My Liberation Notes, Our Beloved Summer

K-Movies: On Your Wedding Day, Train to Busan, Parasite, The Host

Since 2017, I've been a fan of a few K-pop groups, but these days, I'm more focused on NCT, especially NCT 127. But, I have become more interested in Korean football since 2022. I watch South Korea's national football team and K-League matches. I'm a big fan of Son Heung-min and a few other Korean players. I also love Korean variety/reality shows; my favorite is New Journey to the West. My favorite Korean dish to cook is Korean Fried Rice.

I've always wanted to learn the Korean language. I would like to be able to understand Korean shows or videos without subtitles. But besides that, I've always been amazed by their language, vocabulary, and ability to compose letters (like handwritten letters) well.

I expect to learn more about grammar in this class.

Halooo!

My name is Bea Samonte and you can call me Bea. My pronouns are she/her.

Looking back in 2018, particularly when I was in Grade 10, I was assigned to tutor my Korean classmate who was a transferee and did not know how to speak in Filipino—nor English fluently. While being with her, she was able to influence me with watching and listening to Korean dramas and songs. Although I was already a fan of Kdramas and Korean OST songs prior our interaction, she made me want to study and understand the language and their culture as, according to her, I would be able to appreciate dramas and songs with the context of their language and culture. From then on, I tried memorizing the Korean alphabet and the basics of how to read them. However, although I can read the symbols, I still cannot understand the language, nor be able to compose a proper Korean sentence. It seems useless to know and be able to read the symbols without being able to understand it. Hence, even if I had to conquer CRS for multiple semesters, I would like to get Koreyano 10 (and 11 hopefully).

I do not listen to Kpop songs often as I would rather listen to songs from the Kdramas that I have watched or currently watching. My first ever Kdrama that I have watched is titled “I hear Your Voice” starring Lee Jong Suk. In fact, I have already watched it for 5 times (my comfort kdrama).

After finishing this class, I am expecting and hoping that I will be able read and form simple Korean sentences. (Sana maintindihan ko na rin po konti by then yung mga kdramang kinakapuyatan ko)

Lastly, I would like to tell myself that I should simply enjoy the process and have fun with Koreyano 10. And that I should not put pressure too much on myself because doing so would only place me to a tight spot.

Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity due to constraints like finances and time. As for why I enlisted in Koreyano 10 specifically, it's because of my passion for Korean culture, music, and entertainment. Learning Korean will not only enable me to engage more deeply with these interests but also open up new avenues for cultural exchange and understanding. Also, having traveled to South Korea recently, the need to know even the tiniest bit of the language became far more apparent ☺️. I want to be able to navigate the bustling streets of Seoul, order food at local restaurants, and interact with people without feeling like I'm playing a game of charades 😅.

In class, I expect a supportive environment where I can make mistakes and learn from them without feeling judged. I'm eager to absorb as much as I can from our lessons and practice diligently! I hope to make friends along the way too 🩷.

As this semester starts, I want to remind myself to stay committed and consistent in my studies. Learning a new language can be challenging at times, but with dedication and perseverance, I know I can achieve my goals. So, here's to a productive and rewarding semester ahead! 📚✨

Hi! My name is Eugene Sumocad. You can call me Jin hehe.

I started learning Korean way back in 2016 through Duolingo. This, albeit not being a formal way to learn a language, helped me learn their alphabet at the very least. From then on, I started browsing online for books from which I can learn more of the Korean language as well as watching youtube channels such as Talk To Me In Korean. As such, I enlisted in Koreyano 10 not only to have this course together with Koreyano 11 as my foreign language electives, but also to learn more about the Korean language and to refresh what I learned in the past.

Moreover, I want to learn Korean to

be able to watch K-Drama and listen to K-pop songs without having to depend on subtitles/lyrics translations that much.

see how different it is from the Filipino and English language.

I don't have a favorite K-Pop group at the moment, but I listen to K-Pop songs occasionally through Spotify. Lately, I find myself listening more to songs of Viviz and fromis_9.

I also don't watch Kdrama and Korean movies that much, but recently, I have been watching the series Marry My Husband (내 남편과 결혼해줘)

As for my expectations, I expect and hope that this class would help me learn and revisit topics in the Korean language such as vocabulary and grammar. To be honest, it's been a while since I visited my Duolingo app (XD) and I guess my Korean writing and reading skills have started to get cranky.

Lastly, as a message to me:

"Enjoyin mo lang ang Koreyano 10. Isa pa, may kaunti ka na rin namang alam sa Hangul at grammar, kakayanin mo yan. Maging responsable ka lang (pls) sa pagpasa ng reqs on time. For food, I've always loved Kimchi Jiggae because it feels so home-y and comforting, especially on cold and rainy nights. <3

I expect to learn the basics of the Korean language in this class and learn more about Korean culture. I tried to enlist and prerog for this last semester but failed so I really want to spend the remaining time I have to gain basic knowledge at the very least.

Lastly, I wanna tell myself to breathe. Learning a language is not easy but I'm always up for a fun challenge. I hope everyone else enjoys this as much as I hope I will! <3

Hi! I am Cyril Buenaflor (she/her), you can call me Cy. I am a third-year BA Journalism student.

Ever since I entered the university, I consistently enlisted the Koreyano 10 every enlistment period. Aside from the fact that I wanted to take a course that can help me to breath or take a pause in a rigorous schedule, I am really interested in Korean dramas as they never fail to provide variety and high-quality story plots.

While learning Korean for a student-journalist like myself who is aiming to practice her profession in the Philippines, others might say that I am just wasting my time. But personally, I really wanted to challenge myself and explore new things such as foreign languages. Also, this might be funny, but one of the many reasons is that I want to watch Kdramas without subtitles. 😂

Kdramas that have been remarkable to me are Twenty Five Twenty One, Hi, Bye Mama, Hospital Playlist, Moving, and Reply 1988. I’m currently watching A Shop for Killers.

I think this class would be fun and challenging. I am excited to share my interests with other people. This semester, I want to tell to myself that I must conquer the challenges one day at a time. <3

Hello, everyone! I’m Elaiza Helen Gulapa (she/her). You can call me Elai and I'm from Broadcast Media Arts and Studies.

After numerous attempts to enlist in this course, luckily, I was granted a slot (mom, I made it! haha). Ever since 8th grade (around 2017, I think?) I've been very interested in Korean culture since becoming a fan of SEVENTEEN. I was literally obsessed back then; my classmates were so done from hearing me play their songs all day. My fascination led me to dive into K-dramas and K-movies, allowing me to immerse myself further into their rich culture.

I enlisted in Koreyano 10 with the desire to not only learn the language but also to explore the Korean culture and traditions through writing, speaking, and understanding its people. I am also captivated by the Korean media industry, which encompasses their entertainment shows, music, dramas, and movies. It's amazing how they excel in every aspect of production: unique plots, exceptional acting, technicalities, and marketing strategies. As a media student aspiring to work in the industry, they have truly inspired me, especially their variety shows. The work of Korean producer Na Yeong-seok, commonly known as NA PD, and his notable shows such as NANA Tour, 2 Days & 1 Night, and The Game Caterers, have deeply inspired me as I truly enjoyed watching them.

I’m a boy group stan (yes, pls don’t cancel me pi emz). My current K-pop faves are SEVENTEEN, ZB1, and Stray Kids, but I'm a casual listener of other groups and genres too! The K-Films I've enjoyed are Twinkling Watermelon, Racket Boys, Semantic Error, Tomorrow, and Law School. While I'm not particularly fond of their food (elai fake fan emz), I did enjoy Tteokbokki, Bulgogi, and snacks like Melona, Corndog, and Honey Butter Chips!

My expectation for class is that it may be challenging, especially in writing and speaking properly, but I anticipate that this class will be both enjoyable and insightful.

As the semester begins, I remind myself that learning a new language is challenging, but I am confident that I can succeed as long as I remain committed and enjoy learning with my classmates. This is a great opportunity for me to explore new things and challenge myself to embrace different cultures, as I am genuinely interested in learning more.

Hello! I’m Isa from BA Broadcast Media Arts and Studies.

I enlisted in Koreyano 10 because I’m genuinely interested in Korean language and culture. For the past years, I have been self-studying the language and immersing myself in K-culture through Korean entertainment like music and dramas. I also love to go to K-pop events and concerts, and one of my goals is to be an official photographer at a K-pop concert.

I honestly want to learn Korean because I want to be able to watch content without subtitles as it would allow me to multitask while watching. Aside from that practical reason, I also want to exercise the language-learning muscle in my brain while learning more about Asian culture as it is embedded in language.

As of now, my favorite K-pop group is NewJeans! I love how refreshing their approach is to K-pop from the production of their music to their fashion and even in the way that their company promotes them. I also enjoy K-pop in general, and I love to explore content from different groups from all generations of Kpop.

From this class, I expect to learn the basics of the Korean language and to be able to have small conversations using the language with classmates.

As this semester starts, I want to remind myself to appreciate every moment and learn as much as possible with a sincere and genuine attitude.

Looking forward to meeting you all soon!

Hello, everyone! I am Karen Buena but you can call me Kaye instead. I'm a 4th year BS Psychology student.

I have always tried to enlist in Kor 10 every enlistment season. CRS probably granted it to me this time as I am now a graduating student (*fingers crossed*). Since I got into K-Pop during the COVID-19 lockdown, I tried learning the Korean language by myself through various learning platforms such as Duolingo and Talk To Me In Korean. Though unsuccessful because of my inconsistent attempts, I found learning the language fun. I enlisted here as this is also an avenue for me to learn the language and receive somehow a formal training through it.

I want to learn Korean because it would be nice to watch K-dramas without subtitles hehe. But other than that, there are nuances of the Korean culture embedded in their language. I hope to gain a deeper understanding of the pop culture I consume by learning their language.

My favorite K-Pop group is DAY6 and my comfort K-Dramas are Our Beloved Summer and Hometown Cha-cha-cha.

I expect this class to be fun and interactive. I also hope to be motivated to be a consistent learner through learning with my classmates.

As the semester starts, I want myself to remember to be committed in the things that are important to me, and that includes learning :)
