When Johnny and Ponyboy risked themselves in the fire, I thought that we got a new heroic side of them that they didnt even know they had to save children. Also, when Dally risked his life for Johnny really shows his character and how he was other sympathetic for Johnny because they were close. Dally was very strong this chapter and was a hero dispite what Ponyboy says about him.

Pages (122-123)
Johnny's mother disrupts the boys visiting time with Johnny. Once Johnny hears of his mother coming to see him he abruptly starts to speak poorly of his mother but is interrupted by his voice breaking no matter he keeps going. Johnny then passed out the Ponyboy was ushered out of the room and on his way out Two-Bit was trying to go in but he was stopped. So they go to visit Dally but on their way they see Johnny's mother. She is saying a lot of nasty things about the Greasers and when Two-Bit hears it he erupts with anger. After they leave her sight Two-Bit realizes how truly bad his home life is and looks as if he was about to erupt with tears.

Page 149
Dally was broken. His hard exterior was shattered by losing the only thing he cared about. Ponyboy watched as Dally somebody who he thought was an unbreakable breakdown. His breakdown was a long time coming. All of the emotions and feelings he has have been piling up waiting to be released and they were released because Johnny was the only thing he had and now he was gone. Dally loved Johnny and wanted to protect him. Dally wanted Johnny to live a good life to be free but he never got that and it killed Dally. Dally did not care that Johnny died a hero. Dally did not care that Johnny saved those kids lives because all Dally cared about was Johnny. If there was a choice for him to save 100 innocent people or Johnny he would choose Johnny every time without fail. Dally wanted to save Johnny but he failed and for that he will never forgive himself.

Page (142- 143)
Darry is told to start the rumble because of his monstrous build but the person who comes to fight him is his old friend from football. When Darry sees him Soda and Ponyboy can tell the Darry is both ashamed and jealous. Paul shows Darry the life he could have had if he was selfish and gave up his brothers to a boys home. Darry see the life that he was so close to having yet it was pulled away at the last second. He is ashamed because now his old best friend is seeing him like all the other greasers. It is not the fact that they are greasers it is the fact that they are not good people and they will stay greasers their whole lives and are worth nothing more then the dirt on the ground, but Darry could be so much more given the opportunity. If not for his brothers Darry would be a Soc and he would be successful and have the life that Paul was handed on a silver platter.

(Page 120-124)
When Ponyboy and Two-Bit visit Johnny in the hospital, they're the only family that he has so it means a lot to him that they came to visit him. Though when his mother wants to come and visit Johnny he refuses to see her because he finally understands that his parents don't love him and don't care about him. When his parents aren't worried or ask about him when he has to go in hiding, he becomes sad. Though Dally tries to comfort him by telling him the boys are worried and how his parents wouldn't care. Johnny still cares to much not to be sad. But now when his mother wants to see him he tells the nurse not to let his mother in because he doesn't want to see him because he knows that she doesn't care about him. When Two-Bit and Ponyboy leave and overhear the mother's conversation with the nurse we can see that his mother doesn't really care about him at all.

(Page 134)
Ponyboy insists on going to the rumble even though he knows he's sick because he wants to get revenge on those the Socs that ruined Johnny's life. Johnny killed Bob out of self-defense and so Pony wouldn't drown so it was unavoidable. In his eyes its all their fault that this situation happened so he wanted to get some revenge for Johnny. He was devastated that Johnny has to go through all he did at home. It was the least he could do because even if Johnny survives, he'll be devoid of a normal life and be crippled forever. He would rather go fight the Socs than avoid them any longer. He would no longer be scared and be the avoider, he would do it for Johnny's sake.

(Page 149)
When Johnny dies, Dally has it the worst. Dally truly cares about Johnny and will even put his needs before his own. He helps Ponyboy and Johnny hide when Johnny kills Bob and make sure they get to a safe place. He even goes further to visit them when he could to make sure they were safe. Even when Johnny got trapped under the timber, Dally made sure he got out and put his safety before his own and got him out. As a result they both ended up the in hospital, but Dally just wanted to make sure Johnny was safe so he could have the life he never had. Though when he sees Johnny die, the author uses the word agony to describe how he felt because he wasn't just sad, he felt pain as a result of his death. He regrets that he didn't do more to get Johnny out of his abusive home. Johnny was devoid of a happy/normal life and loving parents. But he died before he got to get a good life and Dally regrets that he didn't do more.
MR
