Wilhelm von Gloeden was known for being a controversial gay artist and showcased Sicilian youth. This is a portrait of a Sicilian girl, staring minutely into something in the distance. The lack of background allows for people to focus solely on the portraited girl, and allows you to see the beautiful, yet dirty woman, portraying the destitution of Sicilians at the turn of the century. I loved the expression on her face, as well as the detail that was not usually seen during that time.
