Today we worked in groups and were told that we needed to prepare for a performance. This performance must consist of a 20 minute set that is performed professionally.
I worked on a cover: 'Amy Winehouse - Valerie', I chose this song because it is fun to perform and it engages the audience as it is a song a of people know. furthermore I thought that this was a good song to work with considering who I was working with, we had Malique, who played guitar and Evie who sings. We worked really well together which was a positive and we all very open to suggestion. Evie and I worked really well together creating harmonies on selected parts to enhance the song and compliment each other, which was a strength.
I would say one weakness we had this week was getting the structure correct as this song has an odd structure and Malique strugged to get it right. However towards the end of the session we got it right and was able to run through the whole song with a few harmonies.

This week we worked in the same groups. We had an hour to work on our song from the previous week, which was 'Valerie' and then we had to perform and get filmed. We had to perform in front of the whole group and give feedback to others. This worked well for us as it gave us practice performing together in front of an audience as well as allowing us to reflect back on the video that was recorded so we could see where improvement was needed. Considering we only rehearsed this one week before and then we performed it the week after, we did well together on the whole and delivered a good performance. I would say that we need to improve on getting our harmonies tighter and ensure that our guitarist knows the song structure better. This is something we will work towards in the coming weeks.

Unfortunately one of our band members was ill this week which meant it was difficult to rehearse as they play the guitar. However Evie and I worked together singing acapella and improved on our harmonies. This reminded me that punctuality and time management is key when working together in a band and also finding solutions to overcome any problems is also important too. Although we did not get too much done this session it was better than nothing and we know now that we have to work harder in the coming weeks.

Today I worked with Malique on another cover song. This week I select "Ain't Nobody". We worked well together as we helped each other figure out the song structure. I decided to alter the version of the song in the way I sang it to enhance some of the lyrics, for example I say the work "kiss" rather than sing it. One weakness was that we struggled to figure out the bridge. However It didn't take us too long to figure it out. We also struggled with the timing but we solved that by listening to the original track and used it to guide us. We used effects on the guitar to fill out space in the song as there was only me singing. At the end of the session we performed our song infront of the whole group and gave eachother feedback which was helpful as we were able to reflect on what went well and how we needed to improve.

Today Malique and I worked on a cover "stand by me". This was an easy song to work on for us as the chord sequence is consistant throughout the whole song. The lyrics were also easy to learn as there are quite a lot of chorus'. I chose this song as it works well with an audience due to it being well known. We didn't have a lot of time during this session as Malique was late, however we used the time that we had effectively. Next week we will get straight into rehearsing to avoid wasting anymore time .
.

Today Malique and I worked on our set. We chose to focus on one of my original songs today, called 'Faded Spark'. It took a bit of time to figure out the right timing. After we went through it a few times, we got the hang of it. To help Malique out with the guitar , I showed him previous videos of my song being played live for me which helped him get a general feel for the song, Which was one of our aims for today. The chords for this song are verse : Dm, Em, C & chorus: D, G, C. The vibe of the song is generally Rnb/Pop/Soul, which you get through the minor chords. I think from now on we are going to film ourselves practicing the set list more, so that we can refer back and see where we need to improve, as this helps us out a lot.

Today we worked on our whole set list today and corrected minor errors. Our set ran smoothly in today’s session so it went better than previous rehearsals. However we will have a few extra rehearsals in order to get it perfect for our dress rehearsal next week. We focused on the changes in ‘My Goodbye’ to make it more interesting and enjoyable to perform. Next week we will remain focused throughout the whole session and ensure that we have no distractions.

Today we was given 1hr and 30 mins to work and perfect our set in order to do our dress rehearsal. The dress rehearsal consisted of Malique and I performing our set in front of the whole class. I was confident to perform and ready for the transitions. Overall our set went well, everyone seemed to enjoy it. I enjoyed performing and coped well with the transitions, which I was initially worried about. Malique was not sure on 'Shape Of You' but started anyway, which threw me off slightly however I chose to take a professional approach on it and instead of carrying on, I just stopped, corrected Malique and then apologised to the audience. After reflecting back, although we made a slight error, I am happy that I chose to stop and correct the situation because we eventually got it right. This resulted in the audience enjoying it more and me performing with more confidence. I would have practiced 'Shape of You' more if i knew that Malique was struggling on it more.

Unfortunately I found out today that my guitarist can no longer play for me. This has challenged me because I now have to find another guitarist to play my 20 minute set. This will be my priority for next week. My plan is to keep my set the same and just let my new guitarist know the chords for my songs.

Today Malique was back and able to play for me. This week we just went through the whole set and ensured that it ran smoothly. We focused on songs such as 'Shape of You' and 'My Goodbye' the most as they were the songs that Malique struggled on. This bought us closer as a duet as we had to work together to correct this. Reflecting back I am happy with today’s rehearsal, Malique is going to rehearse more for next week.

This week Malique and I had to perform our set infront of the whole group. We spent 1 hour rehearsing and then we set the room up in preparation for the performance. I ensured that the lighting was low to compliment our intimate acoustic set. In addition, I double checked that my microphone settings was set to how my desired sound. I wanted reverb but not as much as my previous dress rehearsal. During the set Malique and I engaged and reassured eachother throughout our set with eye contact. I also made eye contact with the audience to keep them engaged. They seemed to enjoy the set as a whole. Reflecting back I am pleased with our overall performance, we didn’t make any errors and we remained confident throughout. Furthermore we met our target of making the transitions seamless, we are sure of this as we received feedback from the audience after our set. This was great to hear as it was our initial intention. If we could have changed anything, we would have adjusted the guitar settings as the lead led to a slight distorted sound to the set. Despite this, the audience didn’t really pick up on it and we all enjoyed it. Our first song and and our last songs; “Ain’t nobody” & “Shape of You” were similiar in the sense they were both upbeat. I’m contrast, songs such as “Stand by me” were a lot slower. I believe this contributed to the dynamical of the set and resulted in the audience remaining engaged as we took them through a journey.
