In order to plan a road trip, especially a 10 hour one, you need to know where you are going and how many kilometres it will take for you to get there. An easy way to establish these facts is to search them on Google Maps. Google Maps will give you the most precise and safest route to your destination, along with directions whilst travelling.

If you are the driver for this road trip, make sure you don't get peer pressured into taking everybody you know in your car. a car can only fit so many people, so it's important to keep in mind how big your car is.

As the driver, you are responsible for yourself and all passengers. In order to minimise the risk of an accident on a road trip like this, it is important to choose passengers that won't distract you as the driver. In your car, you need people that will behave sensibly and responsibly as passengers, meaning that they won't disrupt your concentration on the road and possible obstacles.

Step 5: Plan rest breaks

Over the course or a 10-hour road trip, you need to take multiple rest breaks. Driving can be tiring, and Fatigue is one of the major killers on roads. To ensure the safety of you and your passengers, plan ahead and mark out on a map where you are going to stop and take a break. Each rest stop should be located at 2-hour increments along your journey. An ideal location for a rest break is a petrol station, as you can stop your car, park, get food and water, walk around, go to the bathroom, fill your car up with fuel, pump up your tires and use a phone (in emergencies). As well as this, petrol stations are located frequently, so you'll have no trouble finding one every 2 hours or so.

It doesn't matter where you stop exactly, as long as you stop and rest every 2 hours. DO NOT try and drive the complete 10 hours in one go, as the risk of a crash is highly likely.

Before setting out on any road trip, check your oil/water coolant levels, your tire pressure, your fuel gauge and all seatbelts in your car (to make sure they are safe enough to use). These things are essential to safe car diving and will save lives in the case of an accident. If any of these things are broken/run down, get your car repaired or fix your vehicle to the manufacturer's suggestions.

Step 6: Watch the time!

As a P1 driver, it is illegal for you to drive more than one passenger between the hours of 11 pm and 5 am. The risk of a crash between these hours is far more likely than any other time of day. as well as this, between these hours, you would be incredibly tired. Make sure throughout the entirety of your road trip to check the time regularly, as you want to avoid night driving as much as possible. Night driving is more dangerous than driving during the day as you can't see as well. Also, you will be more tired driving at night than during the day. A way to avoid night driving is to start your road trio early in the morning. This way, you can have regular rest breaks and will avoid driving in the dark!

Don't worry if you can't drive to your destination in one day. It's far better for you to arrive late than dead, or seriously injured. If it starts to get dark, find a motel to stay the night in and drive again in the morning. Don't succumb to peer pressure egging you to keep going. Don't risk your life for a deadline.
