     The action above, which involves a quaint demonstration of Dill's ability to sense the tacit messages that others transmit, concerns the character's capacity to quickly consider Jem's silence and modify his request in a way that lessens the burden of the to-be completed task. He also, in a presumable attempt to contribute to the maintenance of Jem's informal status as a brave being, conditions his "concession" to Jem's sensibilities, which, at this time in the text, contain a childish conviction to assert himself in the arena of vague gallantry. When Dill first met Scout and Jem he mentioned that he knows how to read and he could read things for them if they needed him to do so. This showed his worldliness because although he may be small, he knows a lot from his past experiences. Further into the book, Dill seems to be fascinated by the stories of Boo Radley and is excited to learn more about the Radleys.   The excerpt above, by describing Dill's perceivable relations with Radley Place, details the boy's familiarization with Scout and Jem's neighborhood, his temporary home for the summer, and the figures that he notes to be the most consequential. He treats these figures, which assume both the amorphously-characterized family of Radley Place and the house itself, with tentative curiosity (as shown by his refusal to directly interact with the building) while simultaneously falling into a somewhat one-sided communication with the impressions that the house propagates throughout the neighborhood.
