Do you need the base for the idea to work?
The hand  looks nicely developed and overall well proportioned, except that the  thumb seems a little big. I think you will need to somehow simplify the form/ your idea since we are carving and be sure you are specifically addressing hybridization. Lmk if you want to talk. Hopefully you got some good feedback from your peers.

For this, I morphed the thumb and pointer finger as well as the palm with the cactus to create one shape. This simplified my form and allowed me to better my carving overall.

When I first began my carving I first cut out large chunks to get the beginning shape. I then went in with more care to craft the more integrate finger shape and cactus. Originally I tried to make the spikes of the cactus that are so important in displaying the meaning of my project with the soap and wire. However, this did not portray the spikes and create the uncomfortable feeling of mixing smooth skin with a pokey cactus, so I adjusted to just using wire. I think the color and the needles are the strongest suite of this project. I am not sure what I would suggest besides possibly making it bigger to add more detail to the hand. Good job! ]]> 2020-10-27 19:35:19 UTC https://padlet.com/lawsierr/nnvth0crnei3jhbv/wish/867335892 danaholt https://padlet.com/lawsierr/nnvth0crnei3jhbv/wish/867385431 I love the way you added the wire to make the spikes of the cactus, it immediately gives that “uncomfortable” feeling when you look at it.  The wires remind me of stitches too, which I think emphasizes that feeling of discomfort you were going for.  I also really like how you added the burst of red in the middle of the hand (which I don’t know if it was intentional or if the pigment just settled there), but it looks like you are trying to show points of pain, so I thought that was also a nice feature.  I think that you could always add a bit more detail to the hand, like more creases on the palms and fingers, to give it a more realistic feel.  Even adding more texture to the cactus part as well could also look really cool.  Overall, I think the changes you made were very successful and really display that feeling of pain and discomfort you were going for, great job! :)

Your decision to use the wire on the cactus was brilliant. It makes a very strong statement.  And you did a really nice job with the texture on the cactus.

If I were going to continue working on this project, I might clean up the overall shape and lines of the hand. It's hard to tell from the photos, but the thumb feels a little thick. But that would just be my personal preference.

I love how the glycerin ic colored orange, and I can just tell you worked hard on this. 
I think your strongest aspect in this piece is the transition from being a cactus to creating it into a hand. This piece definitely gives me an unsettling feeling, but I like how I can still tell what the object is supposed to be. I think you should maybe add another piece to the cactus, if you wanted to go further with it. I really like the amber color. I thought the use of the wire was successful in the composition. I think that if you stuck with the soap needles it would have been confusing, so good solution!

It creates such a warm feeling almost portraying that feeling of the cactus' natural environment. The use of wire for the spines on the cactus was a nice touch! The strongest part for me is the detail in the cactus!
