The character that Leonardo Dicaprio portrays in the Revenant is a strong willed, determined, individual who seeks revenge on the men who left him for dead. Hugh Glass embodies the idea of self-reliance as he traverses a rough terrain and hostile environment. Hugh Glass is a self-empowering man who seeks redemption after a near fatal bear attack. Hugh Glass is fearless once he embarks on his long journey home saying " I ain't afraid to die anymore, I'd already done it." This quotation from Hugh Glass further characterizes his independent nature and fearless attitude. Glass's persistent nature and perseverance allow him to remain self reliant," As long as you can still grab a breath, you fight. You breathe....Keep Breathing."

In Beyonce's song " Freedom" she establishes the idea that she will break free and produce her own freedom. Beyonce makes multiple references to the idea that she is a strong, independent, worthy individual who must overcome opposition to succeed. Beyonce states," I break chains all by myself
Won't let my freedom rot in hell
Hey! I'ma keep running
Cause a winner don't quit on themselves."

This idea cooperates with Emerson's ideas of strength and inner prevalence. To prevail is to ascend above all whom oppose you and create significance in your own work.

#5- Emerson's use of appeals

"The power which resides in him is new in nature, and none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor does he know until he has tried." this citation from Emerson's excerpt appeals to the pathetic senses. This citation advocates the idea of broadening your horizons but going out and trying. "Absolve yo to yourself, and you shall have the suffrage of the world." This citation is an appeal to the ethical side of Emerson's claim. This idea conveys achieving freedom by absolving one's self. "Self reliance is its aversion." This citation from Emerson's excerpt is a logical appeal to the value and consistency of what self reliance is. Logically pertaining to the audience, this citation is a valid form of definition
