Mary Shelley (30 de agosto de 1797 – 1 de febrero de 1851) narradora, ensayista y filósofa. Nació en Londres, Inglaterra. Su padre fue el filósofo William Godwin y la escritora feminista Mary Wollstonecraft. Su madre murió el día que dio a luz a Mary por una fuerte subida de temperatura. Su padre, posteriormente, se casó con la viuda Mary Jane Clairmont.
La joven fue educada en un ambiente culto y progresista, cuestión importante en un futuro. En el año 1814 comenzó una relación amorosa con el poeta romántico Percy B. En una noche tormentosa, Byron propuso la elaboración de un relato de terror por parte de cada uno de los asistentes en su mansión.
 Mary les leyó su creación, “Frankenstein o El Moderno Prometeo” (1817), magistral historia que se convirtió en un clásico de la novela gótica.
Además de “Frankenstein”, Mary Shelley también es autora de otros títulos menos conocidos, como la novela futurista “El Último Hombre” (1826), la novela histórica “Valperga” (1823) o “Mathilda”.
Esta importante escritora del siglo XIX, falleció el 1 de febrero de 1851, por un tumor cerebral a los 53 años.
