The highlight of ARW2023 was definitely me being able to meet new people with individual stories to share. I learnt from the students at LEF as well as from my peers at UofT. It was eye-opening to see how everyone has been through a unique experience to get where they are right now, and it was quite insightful to be able to take the time to have a conversation with the students and learn about their challenges and strengths!

One of the things I was able to recognise from my experience at LEF was the importance of creating a safe space where everyone felt comfortable sharing their experiences and making mistakes as they tried to convey their stories in a relatively new language (English). I was able to realize that the reason students were able to share parts of them with us (and vice versa) was because we were able to create a non judgemental atmosphere!

At the end of one of the sessions, my partner from UofT shared a deeply personal anecdote that impacted me really greatly. As a newcomer myself, transitioning to Canada has not been easy. However, my partner's sharing reminds me of all the possibilities that this country holds, and how positive impacts have a really good way of coming full circle and being transmitted in a chain of kindness. The LINC students also reminded me of the power of possibilities and determination, despite seemingly insurmountable odds and difficulties. It has been a very humbling week.

This experience has really made me think a lot about my journey here and my time here so far, and exposed me to a different group of people outside of the bubble that UofT and grad school can be. The daily long commute also exposed me to a different side of Toronto, and I enjoyed observing the different types of people we encountered on the bus, and also as reflected in the neighbourhood that the bus passed through.

Above all, meeting the LINC students and LEF programme coordinators has been an immense privilege - I am amazed at the scope of work they do and the services they provide.

As a graduate student whose programme does not have undergraduates, I also felt really grateful to have met undergraduates and other graduate students from many other different faculties through ARW - I learnt so much by exchanging information and life experiences with them.

It might sound slightly hyperbolic, but I really believe that this week has been transformational for me. Despite how easy it is to be caught up in schoolwork, especially at the PhD level, I am really, really glad that I took the time and was given the opportunity to participate in this project. Meeting the students in the LINC programme, getting a glimpse into the important work that LEF is doing for the community and meeting other bright and talented UofT students are all memories that I will definitely cherish.

A big thank you to the Centre for Community Partnerships for allowing me to be a part of ARW, and I hope that future iterations will continue to be organized to benefit many more UofT students by engaging them with community partners for many more years to come.

While my team is not directly in this picture, I snapped it on our second day while we were waiting as a group for Bus 71 to take us to Runnymede station, and facing a stream of buses that were not in service. I still remember our collective groan each time we were greeted by this sign. Additionally, there was also a winter storm the night before and it took a lot of willpower to wake up and make the long commute to 116 Industry St, but all of us still turned up on this day. The LINC students also displayed the same determination - every day we would bump into at least one student who was pushing their child in a pram and onto the bus and finally, the short walk to LEF. I enjoyed the conversations that we had with the students at the bus stop too.

I loved hearing about different cultures and everyday experiences. It was a pleasure to interact with LINC students and talk about the things we have in common as students and learners. I enjoyed gaining a better understanding of different cultures, countries and communicating about the things we have in common and the things we don't. This provided me with a perspective of what hardships newcomers to Canada face and offered me the opportunity to make the experience a bit better by being welcoming.
