The most beneficial learning has been many of the readings we have done for this course. I like how they all can tie into using them in our classrooms and that we as teachers should be looking for new ways to improve. I have taken some classroom management classes, but this course has been different. The readings provide more realistic examples and the activities we have done in class are good to not only implement music, but also with other subjects. I like how one of the readings mentioned to not put off a lot on the first day of school. It is important to remember to set the expectations. It comes off to the students that their future classroom they will encounter daily is a safe and secure one. The students know how they are expected to act and as the teacher, it is up to me to keep track of those behaviors and know when to enforce the expectations during difficult times. An activity we used during class that I enjoyed was the Gallery Walk over the class readings and I could use this as a review of colors in my classroom. Possibly use different types of animals that the children are responsible of knowing at each center. For example, listing off farm type animals or safari animals. With the colors, the students would sing along to the "Color Song" by spelling the color and listing off objects that are red, same as the ones mentioned in the song.

I think that the most beneficial learning moment for me was when Miss Potter stopped us in the middle of our conversation, and continues to stop us, reminding us that there are no bad kids. That our jobs as educators is to be there for the one child who needs us. That just because some days may be more of a struggle than others and some children may fight us harder than others, it doesn't mean that the child is bad, and we cannot under any circumstances write them off as such! If I have to take one thing away from this class, this is the one thing that I want to remember most. Each child deserves to be loved and to be taught as they need best and it is our jobs as teachers to seek to understand them so that we can teach and reach them to the best of our abilities, even if we never get to see the fruit of our labor while that child is in our classroom. This means that I should seek to know my students first. To understand what interests them, and what circumstances they come from and are living in. From there, it is my job to treat each of my students as individuals and not as if they can be put into boxes, "good student," "decently behaved student," "trouble student." And everyday I need to remind myself that each child deserves a competent teacher who loves them and who is willing to go the extra mile to bring structure and security to her classroom. And this can be achieved by creating classroom community and managing the classroom well.

The most beneficial thing I have learned this semester is how to manage the classroom. The readings and Miss Potter have done an excellent job with guidelines and real life experiences. Even in the short amount of time in the class, I have seen myself grow through my work at Boys and Girls Club. I have developed better classroom and behavior management tactics. Sometimes It can be so hard to handle the behavior problems within a classroom. When my students are not following the rules or decide to make a poor decision it can be so hard to not just send them to the office, but I know that wouldn't be beneficial for anyone. My goal for my future classroom is to be able to stop behavior problems before they escalate. Consistency is the most important factor of classroom management. If you are consistent and true with your word, then students will know exactly what to expect from you and there will not be any surprises.

Going into this class, I did not expect to learn important information that would be beneficial for my future classroom. I was wrong. I believe that the biggest take away from MEMT 341 so far is classroom management. Ms. Potter has taught our classroom the value of establishing a community in our classroom. Making your classroom a community pertains to classroom management because by having a safe space where all of your students feel appreciated, heard, and loved makes them work even harder in the classroom setting. Also, I have learned the importance of establishing rules and schedules the very first day of class. Going over the classroom rules on the very first day helps children to understand the consequences of their future actions. I learned that instead of punishing a class, we are going to reward people that participate in positive behaviors. By offering praise, it also helps to establish a sense of community in my classroom.

Honestly, it is hard to narrow down what I have learned in this class to ONE aspect that has been most beneficial. But if I have to choose, I would say that the biggest thing I have learned from MEMT is that possible and crucial to create a supportive and structured classroom. A teacher cannot simply be fun, warm, inviting, understanding, and easy-going; they must also be organized, set and follow through with rules, expect and give respect, and be the one in charge. It is often hard to balance the two sides of being an effective teacher. But with the readings you have assigned, the presentations and lessons you have presented, and by the very example you set in the classroom with us each week, you have taught me to how to do just that. Even though our class only meets once a week, I feel that I may have learned more practical skills and knowledge from this class than any other class individually this semester and possibly even several classes combined. Our class has rules, expectations, community, encouragement, safety, mutual respect, value, and responsibility and that has created a class that I think we all enjoy being a part of. And what is more, I have learned that not only is it important for me to go on to set the same example in my classroom, but also how to go about creating that environment in the future.

The most beneficial learning for me in this class would have to be classroom management skills. I think that it is very important for a teacher to have great classroom management skills to become an effective teacher. I do feel as though the wong and wong readings help too because they tell us very specifically what needs to happen in each situation and I find that very helpful. What we do in class with all the different activities will be used within my future classroom. i think it is very important that students work with others and get along with everybody within the classroom. Creating rules is the first and one of the most important things a teacher could do to help his/her classroom management skills. Having those skills I fell will make me a great and effective teacher.

I think that is a tough choice to narrow down the different benefits, because we have learned SO MANY that can benefit our classes in different ways. I think the most beneficial and my favorite are the different learning styles. I feel that my K-12 education did not focus on different learning styles and more just focused on the "norm." I feel this was a struggle for me having a short attention span and being a very enactive hands on learner. I will implement the different learning styles in my classroom to reach all learning styles and get my students to hold their interest longer by changing things up.
