In Unit 2 discussion 8 was based on a reading called, Planning and Outlining your story. That discussion allowed us as students to get an idea on how to start outlining out story maps or fotonovelas with very useful tips on how to make our context, targeted audience, purpose, and also get an idea on what genre to choose. In that case it was either a story map or a foto novela. This assignment also allowed me to practice analyzing the rhetorical situation of the reading to better understand how to outline, plan, and choose the genre of my final Unit 2.

Discussion 3 we had to choose a Borderlands website from the list provided from our instructor. After choosing the website in the first part we had to analyze it and identify the purpose of the website. In the second part, we had to do secondary research based on the chosen website in order to find contextual information on it. I was also able to practice creating an MLA citation which definitely helped me with one of my other courses since I had to do an annotated bibliography with a minimum of 10-12 sources (non scholarly, and scholarly sources.) Discussion 3 allowed me to build another step closer to my fotonovela.

Unit 2 Assignment 3 was our Digital Story Cover Page of our digital stories, in my case it was for my fotonovela. The cover page had to basically explain our digital stories including the intro, rhetorical situation, evidence or secondary research, conventions, and even the conventions we decided to keep and break from other resources and projects. I did find myself almost overlapping my evidence paragraph and my conventions/genre paragraph, but I was able to differentiate what both were asking. This allowed me to understand and practice what to look for in order to understand a reading better for any jobs or future courses.

An assignment that I did the most revision on in this course so far is definitely my fotonovela. In unit 2 assignment 4, we were able to workshop our peers' digital stories and also receive and give feedback to one another. Our instructor did a great effort in getting the best revisions by also contributing to the feedback given. I was able to use the feedback given from my instructor and my peers to edit and revise my fotonovel to give better context of Nogales, Sonora to my readers. Luckily, I created a page that introduces my grandma and also gives context to the purpose of my writing which was for my grandma for the most part. This workshop experience out of all that I have participated in was the most meaningful, because I wanted to see how others perceived my fotonovela.

In Unit 1 we had an assignment that allowed us to take a self-assessment on our synthesis essay or U1A3. This reflection allowed us to go back and make sure that everything in our essay was correct and up to our instructors expectations. I have always taken self-assessments seriously, because it doesn’t leave out any detail that one may miss throughout the process of creating the essay. I personally took the assessment as I had my synthesis essay draft on the side and fixed anything as I went along the self-assessment. I was able to fix minimal errors that may possibly get me a better grade at the end of the course when we get to choose one assignment to revise and turn in.

Goal #6:Developing a sense of belonging (and examine [dis]belonging), to build purpose in our writing lives

In Unit 2 assignment 1, we had to do a fieldwork journal that had us visit a specific place and in 200 words we had to describe and reflect on the location as well as expand into narrative conventions that focus on very detailed descriptions, sensory details, and personal experiences. Most importantly we had to describe the way the place made us feel and if we sensed a feeling of belonging or disbelonging. Being able to describe the location with images only makes one's description stronger because the reader is able to visualize it. I was able to create a walkway-like fotonovela crossing the international boarder. I feel like this assignment allowed me to practice using sensory details and vivid descriptions in my writing to build more context and make my writing stronger when needed. It also challenged me in connecting my purpose and thesis to my personal experience.

This spring semester was one of the most challenging experiences I have had with my writing experince. Not only because I was presented with multiple new literature genres that challenged my writing abilities, but because I had a course that gave me a hard time with splitting my attention evenly with all my other 5 classes. I had never taken an online course at the U of A other than my introduction classes which were quite easy. I thought that because I had a good experience with my gender and women studies class in my first semester of college, I was going to have a similar experience in my second semester. I wanted to try a different learning experience and decided to take an asynchronous gender and women studies class. Unfortunately I had the worst experience, not because of the content, but because of the different genres being presented to me that I hadn't seen before like memo formats, annotated bibliographies, and a research paper. There's nothing wrong with learning different literary genres, but the professor did not provide enough information for any of the assignments, and hardly helped students navigate through the semester. No matter how hard I looked through all the sections in D2L, I was always lost and full of anxiety with any little assignment or deadline I had in that class. There was a weekly assignment called a Memo, and we had to read about 40 pages weekly on a topic and summarize it to 1 page. At first I would turn in four page memos because I had a very hard time knowing what to look for in the book to choose the correct information in order to shrink the summary to one page. That is where my first papelito reference comes in, papelito 2, “Reflect on when or how you learned to "take notes" IRL. Was it for a job? An important task? How would you describe your note-taking personality?” I initially saw that I was receiving scores (70s, 75s) that I believed were insufficient considering the amount of work and effort I put into the memo. Up until about halfway through the semester when I learned what to look for in the book to include the necessary information in my summary, I started to receive A's and received high B's as the lowest score. Although Once I felt the groove with one assignment, I felt the fear come back when I had to get my bibliography done. I understood that in order to get the fundamental instructions for the bibliography, I would have to persistently seek clarification and advocate for myself. When I did, the professor's responses were typically abrupt and brief and didn't address my question or doubt, which gave me the impression and feeling that I was bothering her for information that I should already know. That caused me to find myself doubting my intelligence and potential quite often, and that affected the way I functioned in my other courses since I consistently found myself giving more attention to my GWS class. It got to a point where I felt like I didn’t belong at the U of A and had me doubting and feeling discouraged to pursue my dream job, which made me feel disappointed in myself because I knew I wouldn't feel satisfied elsewhere. In papelito 6, we wrote on the prompt: “Describe a time when you felt displaced, when you might have felt kicked out, bull dozed, or removed from a place you love. Why was it unjust and what do you think needs to be remembered about that place?” which was perfect for me to write about my situation and experience in that class. Although, with time and with peer reviews in that class, I was able to get a hold of other classmates in my class and was able to reflect on my experiences with this professor. Only to find out that they have had very similar experiences and opinions about the class and the instructor. This instructor came out to be very firm with the deadlines, but hardly gave out any information to her students to easily navigate through tough assignments because all of her assignments were very challenging. In order to reduce my anxiety in my GWS course, I had to figure out a way to continuously be reminded of the deadlines. In papelito 5 we wrote about, “a technological tool or app that you use regularly or are familiar with. What kinds of things do you "compose" with that tool? What have you learned using the tool and what might you use it for in your future work or academics?”, where I talk about the online planner I use for school. Although my gender and women studies course did challenge my confidence and organizational skills, I do believe that it benefited me as a student in becoming more persistent In my writing and checking my planner to be on top of firm deadlines in any future courses.

View My Papelitos At: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1FBszgF9qJcASIWMSYU2C5YB2gmyE8Hji8rz9HQdvddQ/edit?usp=sharing
