1.1 What is cultural heritage? How can it best be preserved?

Cultural heritage is something that connects the past to ourselves and to our future. Through the cultural heritage we can get to know previous generations and it can help us understand who we are and why we are the ones we are. The cultural heritage is also to be found everywhere, if only we look for it. Therefore it is available to everyone.

Museums, local compounds, libraries, national agencies - all have an important task to preserve cultural heritage, but it is also useful in school. To understand what you see requires teaching. Haven't you all noticed the difference between visiting a museum with a guide and without a guide?

My name is Annica Helmer and I am, of course, a teacher. I live just south of Stockholm, Sweden together with my husband and two daughters. When I'm not working I'm interested in nature, gardening, crime novels and TV-series, outdoor hiking, travelling... Right now I spend my spare time together with my youngest daughter when she tries to learn to master the bike, to swim, to skate, to go skiing, to read and count!

I work in a public school where some 600 students meet up for learning, ages 6 - 16. My students are 13 - 16 of age and I meet them when they study geography, history, social studies and religious studies. I organise the teaching so that we study each subject for 8 weeks (our year at school is 36 weeks). Most classes have 25 - 30 students and all students have got an iPad each. The wifi is pretty reliable. I also have got a smartboard and a PC in my classroom.

Some 15 years ago my school participated in a exchange programme where we had contact with a school in Baltinava, Latvia. The swedish students didn't know their folk dances! The latvian students did and what fun we had!

It includes both history and geography, and I can include a field trip (which I'm not good at). Follow one bottle of Coca Cola from the factory in Jordbro: where does it go? Where do the ingredients come from? Are the transports sustainable? Cultural heritage? Local railway? Local motorway?

Europeana makes it easy for you to find content that can be reused for educational purposes. Once you have found it, write a note on the Padlet and add the following information:

Title of object

Author of object

Type of license (how you can use this object)

Link to the object

As a teacher, you will find many ideas in Europeana´s thematic collections that will inspire you to create your next lesson.
