The teacher, Mr. Pruitt asked his students to gather into groups to then research different parts of Africa where they would like to make a microloan to a prospective borrower who was trying to start their own business in this other country. Students were asked questions such as:
"Will you team lend to a male or female?"
"To what extent may the individual and his or her group, village, or community benefit from your team's microloan?"
"What factors in the regions you are considering investing in does your team need to consider?"
Students then spent time researching inside and outside of class coming up with who or what they would like to invest in. Once the team had narrowed their possible investments into two, they used videoconferencing to talk to teachers who lived and worked in the country/countries where their potential candidate lived. The students then created summaries describing why and who they were to invest in.

Strategy

A strategy that Mr. Pruitt used in his lesson is higher order thinking. In higher order thinking, students are required to engage in deeper thinking, being a choice maker, a problem solvers and creators (Hale, p 21). This relates to this lesson plan in Chapter 8 because the students are asked to do their own research in finding their own perspective borrowers and weighing the pros and cons to each borrower they came across and which one would align with their own values in the process. Students were asked to look deeper into the African culture and used multiple types of research choices to get there such as online or videoconferencing with teachers who live and work in their chose African area. The students had to decide which information was important in choosing who they would invest their microloan in and then were able to put their choice into words, fully understanding why they made the choice they did.

Additional Strategy

Another strategy that Mr. Pruitt used inside his classroom in this lesson is glocal connections. In glocal connections, it is merely combining global and local, and where you act locally to effect change globally (Hale, p 23). This lesson plan was the very essence of this strategy. The students were asked to work inside their classroom to change the lives of an entrepreneur(s) in Africa. In order to effectively use this strategy, students must use their local resources to fully understand the global issues, beliefs, and heritage of where they are making an impact. Students also must use collaboration to make decisions based on the needs of who they are serving (Hale, p 24).
