Firstly, I believe there should be an increased level of transparency overall when it comes to the privacy discussion. Being presented with pages upon pages of text when you first open the app and being expected to read it all is simply not going to happen for the vast majority of users. More often than not, users do not know what they are agreeing to when they accept the platform’s terms and conditions. So realistically, who knows what information we are giving up? Following on from this, I think it only fair for users to be made aware of why their information may be collected or shared, instead of being vague with the wording. I also believe the general privacy settings on the app should be simplified, as Anderson (2017) says, “more than half of 12–15-year-olds are on Instagram.” Given these numbers, privacy settings should be made as simple to customise as possible, I also think a barrier should be put in place, in order to prevent any users under the age of 18 from having public accounts. As the 5Rights Foundation explains, many platforms ignore the fact that there even are users under the age of 18 on their platform, this simply is not good enough. Those under 18 must be protected on social media platforms, or the process to set up an account must be programmed in such a way where it is much more difficult to get a profile under 18 years of age. There are practically no systems in place to stop young children lying about their age when setting up accounts on social media – this problem must be addressed. Along with the previous points made, I think regular updates and notifications about any changes regarding the privacy policy should be made abundantly obvious to users, in plain and simple language. There should also be an option provided to users who want to keep their account as private as possible, to opt-out of particular options in relation to data collection.
