Repetition in Music by

Ratliff explains that there are two kinds of repetition; the bad kind and the good kind. The bad kind could be when someone is “greedy or punitive, self-absorbed or cruel.” Such as scowling someone for a long period of time. Also, repeatedly having to smoking a cigarette after every meal. But there is also good repetition that has breaks in between something, causing it to be a healthy amount of a certain thing. “This kind of repetition might suggest positive upkeep, or providing for others, or adding to an ongoing process: helping your child get ready for school…” I agree with Ratliff’s arguments regarding repetition in music. Repetition in music can be a good thing because it keeps the listeners listening. Repetition may cause the listener to learn the song faster which makes it easier to memorize and sing along too. “Repetition puts a spell on you,” Ratliff says. “The stubborn note takes a spell off you.” For example, Ratliff examines the song “Ain’t it funky now” by James Brown. Within the song Brown “repeats, as often as he likes, sometimes as a neutral marker in between the band’s repetitions, and sometimes as an exclamation, centering your attention.” Repetition keeps listeners intrigued because it’s easier to keep up with. An example of repetition in a song that I could think of would have to be Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” This song is an excellent example of repetition because Swift constantly repeats “look what you made me do” I think she did this to not only make the song catchy but to also get her message across. She wants all the people who have did her wrong of have simply hated on her to know what they did to her, what an affect they had on her and her life.

"Repetition is a smart psychological operation—a way to make you focus on all that is in fact nonrepetitive. The music seems to stay put, while you (or your perceptions) change. Then you stay put while it changes. It suggests infinity or eternity, basically."
