It is around the year 1984 and The Party has been at war for years. Very few members of The Party are able to recall more than a few years prior to present-day and the idea of individualism was forbidden. Big Brother watched and listened to everyone--no one was never alone. Protagonist Winston Smith is not like the others. He does not blindly accept the ways of The Party, but he is aware of the consequences of looking even slightly objective. Throughout the story, Winston battles new found emotions and the urge to rebel, all while blending in to his dystopian society.

This novel addresses many of things that the world is facing through a variety of societies, and I think this causes the reader to think about what is truly going on in their daily lives. I find Orwell to be brutally honest and he does not try to sugar coat any of the issues he mentions, which I find to be respectable.

The book did take awhile to get interesting, which I was not a fan of, but once it got started I really enjoyed it.

This novel teaches that the government has more power than we might think. Winston shows that sometime being an individual is worth fighting for, through him we see an extreme case of the powers we could be going against. Orwell shows the reader what could happen if a society gives up too much power and he encourages us to fight for our human rights.

In Matched, the government controls the lives of the citizen by monitoring how they act in order to sort them into certain groups. Although Matched is not to the same extent of 1984, both stories feature an over powering government and unique, individual protagonists.
