I definitely agree with Peri. All people and cultures deserve the opportunity to be able to showcase all different types of stories; white and American films depict all different types of people, good or bad. Not all films have to be activist-based to create progress within the film space.

I think as the younger generations grow up and become the new "voices," representation that are usually underrepresented in the past will come to light, reason why liking KPOP and Anime are considered cool. I think the influences come from who is able to produce and shift the market.

So to answer the idea of both positive and negative representation in media, there's nuance to the situation. For one, you have a feeling of obligation of not showing your community as just as good if not exceeding White Supremacy's expectations. In defense of many actors and movies back then where it looks quite dated as far as showing representation, under Hollywood and other forms of media (even now), you are funded by many White-dominated companies for your chance at representation. Either you had to mold to how you want White people to see you or break from the mold from that stereotype because it is not you nor is it your community.

I agree with E'niah's point about how actors of color have to fit into Hollywood's demands for minority roles, and how these actors have to take work that is at times demeaning or stereotypical for the sake of putting themselves out there in the industry. One example that sort of pops out to me is Constance Wu, who portrayed the mom in Fresh Off the Boat. A few years ago she expressed a lot of anguish at the fact that the series got renewed and that she would have to keep acting in the show. This is because being on a sitcom meant she had to give up other acting opportunities that she found to be more compelling. When you take into account the stereotypical nature of her character in the show, it's clear where her frustrations lay.
