Make assumptions, especially who they are/background.

 don't really understand how to do it unless you experience it

intention of the class focuses on the people, but not really focuses on the system of things

teachers don't really take these ethnic classes so they don't really understand how to teach cultures

*Teachers who are not in major cities do not understand the culture of black or latino kids.
*Hard to connect with kids if they have not been exposed to the needs of the kids.
*Working in a school with predominately Asian students, the answer is not more testing.  Test are bias and anti color. (response to quote on page 130)
*Not in agreement with more testing.  If Neoliberalism is causing competition and oppression then it is not good for kids.
*Teach the kids about other cultures, cultural studies.
*Problem: text books do not have information about all groups.
*Having guest speakers from other cultures to come share their customs, foods, or to see what they have in common with other groups.
*Critical Race theory: consider the things we sponsor, things we go see.  Make a point to connect with students and what they like.  Listen to the students, making it known that they have a voice.  It is heard and valued.

1) Most White middle class students, the demographic of most teacher ed programs, haven't had meaningful interactions with dark people.  If you don't know much about the culture of your students, you don't have the knowledge of the hardships AND beauty- ALL of who they are.  One class about diversity focuses on the ills of a culture but not in context--all the systems that led to the racism. Teachers need to study the history and culture of the children they're going to teach.

2) A classroom teacher can begin our commitment towards equity and equality by first being willing to have those hard conversations about race, culture and learning styles.  We can start by not jumping to conclusions, or judging them, based on their background.  This is where learning deeply about their culture is vital.
