"Children, thrown into the flames . . . I pinched myself: Was I still alive? Was I awake? How was it possible that men, women, and children were being burned and that the world kept silent?"
This was the first step towards Elie losing his faith in god. Once a devout religious/spiritual person who believed in god; seeing the horrors of mankind made him question if god even existed and why he'd let this happen

"My heart was about to burst. There. I was face-to-face with the Angel of Death" (Context: Elie and his father were being walked to the crematorium. But last second they were turned away)
This changed Elie to let him know that this was no play time. his life could be ended with swift action and it struck fear into him. (I could have found a better quote but it still works)

"An ordinary innmate does not have the right to mix into other people's affairs. One of you does not seem to have understood this point. I shall therefore try to make him understand clearly, one and forall" (Elie, pg 57)
Context: The Kapo called up Elie and had him lie down on a crate. He was beat senseless by the Kapo until the pain stopped hurting, he had became numb to everything else and only could focus on the lashes. He fainted after intense amounts of pain
This was aa step towards Elie losing even more of his faith. He had became numb to the world and his father was the only thing keeping him afloat.

"On the third night of our journey, I woke up with a start when I felt two hands on my throat, trying to strangle me"
Everyone around him was too weak, his father had to call someone else to deal with his aggressor. If he didn't have the chance to call out to his father, or his father had fallen asleep, Elie would have died.

(His father) "I can't anymore . . . It's over . . . I shall die right here . . .' . . . I could have svreamed in anger. TO have lived and endured so much; was I going to let my father die now? Now that we would be able to take a good hot shower and lie down? 'Father!' I howled 'Father, get up! Right now! You will kill yourself..."
The roles have reversed where Elie is now the one encouraging his father to keep on going.
