Points of contacts: I think besides charities and care homes, we could establish collaborations with hospitals or clinics and see if their patients would like to share their ageing issues with us. In most jurisdictions/countries, we have public and private hospitals and clinics. What I can also think about is the private teaching hospitals in Hong Kong. For example, we have CUHK Medical Centre Limited (a non-profit, private teaching hospital wholly owned by The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Since this type of private teaching hospitals are also run and owned by universities (understanding the importance of research), I think the likelihood of developing collaborations would be higher. Also, there is another popular type of clinics which specialise in Chinese Medicine. In particular, older people tend to see doctors from these Chinese Medicine specialty clinics if they have some minor recurring problems.

I found a bite-sized literature review (a letter to the editor) about Ageism. I just realise that 1 Oct was the International Day of Older Persons! I like the idea that it talks about how Ageism, inflicted by implicit bias and unspoken prejudice, and its internalisation is complicated.

Intergenerational programmes are one form of intervention which may offer benefits to the care home environment and its residents by engaging people with dementia in new relationships and activities with younger people.

Supporting the mental health of both the student and older adult population by establishing organised walks around Bath and the surrounding skyline, which may also help to reduce social isolation from the Pandemic. Older adults could volunteer to lead the walks and provide first year fresher students with an insight into their knowledge of the area, including the history of some of Bath's heritage sites, such as the Abbey, Roman Baths and Royal Crescent. Walks in nature are also likely to provide benefits for wellbeing, connectivity and physical health, e.g. reducing the risk of falls in the older adult population.

The chapter describes some design approaches for creating intergenerational indoor and outdoor environments that are conducive to healthy, active lifestyles for people of all ages. It explores issues related to creating parks and playgrounds, streets and sidewalks, purpose-built age-integrated centres ('intergenerational shared site' facilities) and other community settings where the generations can readily meet, interact and work together to adopt healthier lifestyle behaviours. https://www.taylorfrancis.com/chapters/edit/10.4324/9780203736920-3/creating-intergenerational-spaces-promote-health-well-being-matthew-kaplan-jawaid-haider

We could create a community garden initiative in partnership with student services and Age UK to invite students and older adults to grow and plant fresh produce in the University's allotment. This would allow ideas to be shared along with learnt experiences and could help to reduce ageism by involving both populations in the University community. Gardening also provides benefits for both physical and mental health. Growing fresh produce to share may also help to support students and older adults with nutritional intake and healthy eating as well as supporting reductions in climate change. To have a greater social impact, any surplus fresh produce could be donated to Bath's Foodbank or Foodcycle schemes and this partnership may provide opportunities for both students and older adults to volunteer in community engagement.

Gardens as Learning Spaces: Intergenerational Learning in Urban Food Gardens

Urban food gardens are situated at the interfaces between individuals, households, generations, neighbourhoods, communities, public institutions, and market forces. Urban food gardens constitute spaces where a great deal of learning takes place among those engaged in gardening activities. More specifically, this paper explores urban food gardens as learning spaces in which socially organized intergenerational non formal and informal learning takes place. Service-based intergenerational learning in community gardens also serves the education and training of young people in the welfare and care professions (Hegeman, Roodin, Gilliland, & Ó’Flathabháin, 2010). Urban farms and community gardens have developed their activities as providers of day-care facilities for the elderly in addition to the husbandry of animals and the production of food. Therapy gardens and community arts may also provide an opportunity for intergenerational engagement. https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/15350770.2017.1260369
