News: FIRE AT 02 ARENA

More than 1,200 people were evacuated from the O2 Arena in London due to a fire at a restaurant.

London Fire Brigade said it was called to the arena on Millennium Way, Greenwich, at about 11:15 BST.

About 21 firefighters tackled the blaze, which was contained to the restaurant's extraction system.

Station Manager Martin Freeman said: "It did create a lot of smoke and so security staff evacuated people from arena. There were no injuries."

At the time Julie Price tweeted: "At O2 for Elvis exhibition but can't go in as its on fire."

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Gourmet Burger Kitchen actually has a location at The O2 arena in London.

There are also three 24-hour McDonald's, two KFCs, two more Gourmet Burger Kitchen locations, one Fine Burger Company, a Byron Hamburgers location, and a Subway within two miles of The O2 in London.

The Subway in Green Place is about 0.2 miles southeast of The O2.

Fine Burger Company is about 1.1 miles east of The O2.

There's also a Byron Hamburgers about 1.2 miles west of The O2.

Spectators in the O2 Arena can make use of 26 fast food stands located on the two public floors (1st Floor and 4th Floor). They are named according to the type of meals they offer.

02 Arena set for major expansion

The O2 contains two venues, a cinema, an exhibition centre and restaurants

Developers have been granted outline planning permission to expand the O2 Arena in south-east London.

AEG will expand the site in Greenwich, by another 26,000 sq ft, adding nearly 40% to the existing space.

It currently houses a 20,000 seat arena, a cinema, exhibition space, the Indigo music venue, bars and restaurants and conference facilities.

The exact details of the expansion are expected to be approved by Greenwich Council at a later date.

Council leader Cllr Chris Roberts said: "The O2 success and these future expansion plans demonstrate how the long-term strategy for the area is coming to fruition."

Since it re-opened in June 2007, the O2 has attracted more than 10m visitors.
