He then tried to escape but was recaptured by a policeman because he was suspicious of Rudolf wearing two pairs of socks and in June he was sent to Auschwitz. Each day some prisoners worked outside the main gates that were only guarded during the day. Rudolf and Alfred hid in a pile of wood soaked with gasoline and Russian tobacco which would deter the search dogs. When the Nazi's discovered that Rudolf and Alfred hadn't returned they spent three days searching for them but never found them. The reports included detailed descriptions of the camp including the gas chambers and the process of the Jewish people being killed. While their reports didn't make it to most of the Hungarian Jews it did make it to Switzerland which then made it to British and American media so by June 1944 they were reporting on the harsh reality of Auschwitz-Birkenau. World leaders were making appeals to the Hungarian government to stop the deportation of Jewish people.
