the legal system consists of rules and laws to help keep in check. the death penalty was abolished in 1991 but crimes can still be fined for or sentenced to prison for if committed. Tougher penalties go to drug traffickers due to Ecuador being very strict about narcotics. small amounts being trafficked will result in about 6 months in prison whereas the punishment is 3-5 years for larger amounts.

In a dictatorship, all of if not a majority of the power is given to one person. Citizens have no say in who governs or leads them. in a democracy they have the freedom to choose who is in office. Although one person ruling over people in a dictatorship speeds up government decisions rather than going through a lawmaking process, a lot of people still aren't satisfied with how their country is ruled.
