Each year when we read short stories as
part of an ELA class, students are required to choose an author and write a mini-biography about him prior to reading his short story. The Literary Reference Center found in GALILEO Teen contains useful resources such as biographies, literary criticisms and analyses, and even interviews on various authors. Students can access information for their mini-biographies through the Literary Reference Center. Also, this could be a good way for students to try new authors. For example, if I have a student who reads nothing but Diary of a Wimpy Kid books, then he could look up Jeff Kinney and perhaps find some of Kinney’s influences or favorite authors. Knowing that Kinney was inspired by these authors might convince the student that it’s okay to read other books.

This database could help with covering research and writing standards (as is the case with the mini-biography assignment) or reading standards (students researching their favorite author to find other authors for reading choice books).

ELAGSE7W2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content.

I performed a search for “Fanfiction” as many of my seventh graders are interested in this topic. There were loads of articles about Fanfiction and Fandom, but the one I found most interesting was an article titled “Exploring Fandom: Teaching narrative writing through fanfiction” written by Fay Jessop. This article argues for the use of fanfiction to teach narrative writing basics and shares details of how this was implemented in a classroom as well as offers examples of student work.

This article could be used in conjunction with writing standards. In addition, this database could be used by students to search for examples of narratives, including fanfiction, in order to assist them with writing their own narratives.

ELAGSE7W3: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences.
