General Lee headed west<br>Arrived in Appomattox County on April 8<br><br>Lee and Confederates tried to get food but cut off by Union troops<br>Tried to escape but captured<br><br>2. Lee surrendered his troops a day later saying that he would rather "die a thousand deaths" than surrender<br>Had no choice<br><br>Grant's surrender terms were very generous<br>Once Lee's officers and men surrendered, sent back home<br>Would not be disturbed by Union unless they disturbed first<br>Allowed to keep horses and mules<br>Food was given to army<br><br>3. On April 6th, Lee lost around 6,000 men<br><br>Lee got to Appomattox Courthouse on 8 April<br>That night, reflections of Federal campfires against clouds showed that Confederates were surrounded on three sides<br><br>4. Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia, is where Confederate army, surrendered to Union<br>April 9, 1865<br>This surrender commonly viewed as end of Civil War, but afterward Confederate States' government briefly attempted to maintain its rebellion<br><br>Confederates led by General Robert E. Lee<br>1807–1870<br>Union troops led by General Ulysses S. Grant<br>1822–1885<br><br>Confederate surrender came after lots of encounters between Confederates and Union<br>80,000 Union troops made 35,000 Confederate soldiers get out of Petersburg, Virginia<br>End of March 1865<br>Grant continued pushing them south<br>Eventually managed to cut them off and surround them<br><br>On April 9, Lee sent flag of truce to Grant<br>The two generals met that afternoon to arrange surrender<br>Grant was very generous with terms<br>A total of 28,000 Confederate troops were released after promising not to fight</div>]]></description>
