The first paragraph and the last paragraph both talks about the donkey race as a "wacky race" and the two companions were glad that they helped out Levine however did not tell her that Yaqoob did not have a driving license.
The last paragraph circles back to the first paragraph which carried the idea that the lads "really enjoyed that," (driving through the race), emphasizing on how exciting and tense donkey racing is.
Both the first and final paragraphs of the story leads back to the idea of donkey racing as being "wacky" and "causing a massive pile-up in the middle" kind of race. This further illustrates the writers feelings towards this type of donkey racing. It is also evident that the first and final paragraph both emphasizes the size and significance of donkey racing in the Pakistani culture. This is amplified when in the first paragraph the writer adds quotations which suggests that many people want to go see the donkey racing: "we'll open the car boot, you climb and follow the donkeys..."

The author uses series of shorts sentences in the extract of 'A Game of Polo with a Headless Goat'. This technique's effect is to grab the reader's attention and build tension. "The race was over. And then the trouble began.", the short sentences have the readers waiting for what comes next. They're quite flashy, and make us feel as if in the middle of all the mayhem. Furthermore, the use of a full stop between the two short sentences gives a substantial break which allows us to attempt at predicting the upcoming tribulation. Another example, with a different purpose for the long sentences, would be to inform the readers about small but important details in a snappy way- which makes the story more interesting; "Yaqoob loved it." this short sentence helps the reader to imagine Yaqoob's excitement and the intensity of what just took place. The fact that it talked about the character's emotions makes him seem like a human with passions, instead of just another face in a book; it also does it in a very short manner which does not waste much time. If the sentences were not rapid and short they would end up boring the reader; instead they bring suspension.

Levine uses ellipsis in the extract of 'A Game of Polo with a Headless Goat'. This use of punctuation applies an effect which tells the reader that a break is happening while this madness endures. Before the ellipses the extract states 'His language growing more colourful' which displays the image which the ellipsis lengthens of the chaos that is happening.
