Since I was little, I’ve always felt a connection to music. I was never the type to play instruments of any kind or join band or choir. In fact, I tried to and hated it. We had music class from 1st grade- 5th grade but it was only once a week and would be cut and then brought back so many times that I don’t even know what years I actually had it. I don’t remember anything we did either except the time we played recorders. I remember in elementary school, I played the recorder and loved it. I even had my mom buy me my own so I could play it at home. My music teacher thought that since I was so good at the recorder, and clearly enjoyed it, I should try to play the clarinet. So, in fifth grade, when I could join band, I played the clarinet. At first, I liked it, but then I had to preform and swore I never wanted to play again. By the time I got to middle school, I didn’t even like playing the clarinet anymore, but they told me I had to stick with it because eventually I’d “learn to love preforming.” My mom let me quit second semester of 7th grade. I still loved music, so I got into my church band that the youth director was started. I tried to sing but could never let myself to turn my microphone on, so I moved to the sound board. I even tried to be in a musically, but I couldn’t even do that. Now, I enjoy music differently. I listen to it everywhere I go, in my car, around campus with earbuds, or in my room but I don’t force myself to preform whether it’s in front of 1 person or 100. I’ll leave the preforming to my fiancé, he wants to be a famous Christian singer/songwriter someday and I’ll be his biggest fan, far off stage.

From my experience, I’ve learned that everyone relates to music differently. I will never force my students to perform in front of people if they tell me that really don’t want to. I will not let them use this as an excuse and get out of class. Instead, I will include them in other ways if that’s what they feel is best when preforming in front of people outside of class. As a teacher, I want them to feel safe enough in my classroom to share their feelings and not put them in positions that might make them turn away from music in general.

After reading about music in many articles and websites, I found that music is extremely important for students to have in schools and not only because of state standards. It deserves to have more emphasis and more money put into it because it’s building students confidence and giving them a way to express themselves. Music is thrilling and exciting to learn. They say that learning to play instruments feeds the brain by helping you cognitively, creatively, and physically. It’s even proven that music can improve memory and bring peace. Connecting with their classroom teachers, music teachers can help music be taught throughout the curriculum. Even if they just play relaxing music while taking tests, it’s a start.

These students need music in their classroom to create safe environments and strong relationships. You can even connect the community to the school by inviting them to concert or programs. It will bring in new donors which can build the program, spike students’ interest, donate more instruments and better the school.
