FARMER: Mr. Jiang's (John-gs) Edible Yard by John Farmer

Padlet starters: Use one or more of these words in a padlet entry to tell about your learning today: photosynthesis, diversity, edible yard, rain barrel.
Which plant was most interesting: squash, bitter melon, yellow pepper, red pepper, turnip, ginger, taro root, shiso, green onions, cherry tomato, carrot, mint, okra, Chinese string bean, squash, or eggplant? How does photosynthesis relate to Mr. Jiang’s edible yard? What plants have roots that are food? Leaves? Fruits?
Name a way that you were respectful, responsible, and/or safe on our walking field trip.

It's so cool how Mr.Jiang's plants are watered by rain water that comes through the gutters and into a bin. It was also cool that he had an edible yard. I would love to have an edible yard like that. The most interesting edible thing that I probably saw was the ginger root. One way I was respectful, responsible, and safe is I didn't walk inside of the garden. I stayed on the outside of the garden. It's cool to think that the whole garden wouldn't happen without photosynthesis.

I think the most interesting plant was the squash, and how it grew in a big tunnel made out of twigs. It was so cool to get to see the water barrel gathering water from up on the roof. I loved getting to see the ginger growing in the ground, and also getting to see the long green beans. The way that photosynthesis connects with the garden is the water comes in through the roots and it goes through the stems into the leaves, which helps it grow. Overall it was an awesome field trip.

There was a diversity of plants, but my favorite was the long string beans. The tunnel was super fun because there was big huge fruit dangling down from a vine and Mr. Jiang had to put stuff under them so It didn't fall. That was my favorite part of the field trip. I learned that Mr Jiang had to work most of the time on his garden to make it so BIG!

I can't believe that the taro or elephant ears were bigger than my face. They had a huge rain barrel that had a hose. I liked smelling the mint. I can't believe all these plants grew by photosynthesis. I also learned that you can eat the roots, leaves and fruits of different plants.
