* To be honest, I had not heard about the Georgia's violations of ADA and IDEA.
* ADA is a civil rights law that guarantees access, and it prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in public services and employment. IDEA is an education act that guarantees success, and it requires public schools to provide FAPE to students with disabilities in the LRE.

I know that the IDEA is the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and that the ADA is the Americans with Disabilities Act. The ADA outlines the rights of people with disabilities and the IDEA is more specific to the education of individuals with disabilities. I know that the IDEA helps define what a learning disability is and ensures that students who need special education services receive them in the best possible manner.

I am unfamiliar with Georgia's violations of ADA and IDEA. I know that ADA is the Americans with Disabilities Act. This act protects individuals with disabilities against discrimination in the areas of employment. I also know that IDEA is the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. IDEA states that all children with disabilities deserve the right to a free and appropriate education. IDEA is important for the success of all children. It includes important aspects of education such as early intervention. Both of these Acts are important because they allow individuals with disabilities equal opportunities.

When the federal justice department investigated Georgia’s violations, they focused on ADA’s provisions more than they focused on IDEA’s provisions, because the advocates felt that ADA is a more powerful civil rights tool.

The advocates’ reasoning was that IDEA is focused on individual students, which they thought made it a less effective act for systems-level change.

For example, IDEA requires that all students on IEPs be placed in the LRE where their needs can be met. The advocates explained that, in Georgia, students with disabilities were frequently sent to the segregated Georgia Network for Educational and Therapeutic Support (GNETS) program because neighborhood schools did not have the supports and services those students needed. Thus, the individuals were the focus in that solution, not the schools. According to ADA, the schools should have changed so that students with disabilities can access them just as readily as students without disabilities, because schools serve the public.

I know that the ADA and the IDEA are both federal laws enacted to protect those with disabilities and ensure they receive equal treatment and specialized care. I had not heard about Georgia's violations of these laws, and I would like to know more. I took a class last term that focused on the IDEA, and learning disabilities; I learned a lot about how schools schooled be treating children with disabilities and the procedures to follow diagnosis.
