In history and social studies it is important to present information from multiple viewpoints. The Civil Rights movement in the United States is an event that would have multiple perspectives to view.

In Literature and Language Arts including books, stories, and poems from diverse authors and cultures is really important for learning about various cultural backgrounds. Farewell to Manzanar is a novel that digs into the perspective of Japanese-Americans during World War II. This is a great novel to use and read to learn about other viewpoints.

Introducing students to art and music from different cultures encourages them to create their own work, and can inspire students.

The classroom environment should include multicultural artifacts, posters, and maps. Celebrating cultural holidays and festivals also helps to create an inclusive atmosphere.

Designing a curriculum that reflects the diverse cultural backgrounds of the students is really important in making sure all of the students feel valued.

Having differentiated instruction with cultural sensitivity is also needed in the classroom. Tailoring instruction to meet the diverse cultural needs of the students is needed when lesson planning. Being aware of cultural differences in communication styles, learning preferences, and values is really helpful when figuring out what works best for the class.

Flexible grouping is something that can also be really helpful in the classroom. This allows students to work in different groups based on their beliefs, needs, interests, and skill levels. Rotating the groups also gives the students a chance to learn about one another, and the chance to collaborate with diverse peers and learn from different perspectives.

Taking on professional development opportunities to learn about cultural competence is also something educators can do. The trainings can help educators understand and address their own biases, learn about cultural practices, and develop strategies for inclusive teaching.

Multicultural displays are really important to have within the classroom. Decorating the classroom with posters, artwork, and materials that represent various cultures is really important in making sure the students feel like they are valued.

Having a diverse book collection in the classroom that the students have access to can really help foster a multicultural classroom environment. Books that feature characters from different backgrounds and cultures are important for this.

Promoting an open dialogue in the classroom helps students feel safe in expressing their values and beliefs. This encourages open discussions about cultural differences and similarities. This helps the students learn from one another. Inclusive language practices are also really important to have, and it means a lot to students when you are willing to learn some of their language.

Organizing activities where the students can share aspects of their culture. Like the students making presentations about themselves, and their culture to share with the class if they would like, as a "get to know you" activity at the start of the year. This can help students learn about and appreciate each other's backgrounds.

Cultural heritage days or nights where community members can come in, and learn from the students directly about their different cultures is a great way to have engagement. Students can talk about their beliefs, tell stories, show dances, and talk about their cultural language. These are just some of the things they could share information about, there is so much more they could do!

Having a storytelling hour where community members can come in and tell stories to the students in their native language. This can help teach the students about all of the diverse languages that are around them, that they probably do not know about.

Student Success Conferences with the students parents or guardians to talk about the student and how they are doing is really important, and does a lot to help the students be successful. This helps ensure everyone is on the same page.

Community family nights that the school district puts on is something that is also really beneficial for the students and the educators. This opens up the door to great connections being made with the students and their parents or guardians. It is also really beneficial if the family night activity can be paid for by the district through fundraising, or whatever it might be, to give families a chance to not have to worry about finances if they choose to attend.
