Refugee Stories by Jafia

Refugee Stories – Education: Obstacles and Aspirations draws on findings from my doctoral research on young refugees’ educational experiences in England. I focused on how young people and their families have encountered the education system while considering the challenges they have experienced as refugees. - Jáfia Naftali Câmara, PhD

My name is Jáfia Câmara, and I have recently finished my PhD in Education at the University of Bristol. My research focused on how young refugees and their families encounter England's education system, and I aimed to amplify young refugees' experiences and perspectives of education and life in England. I adopted a methodology that included participatory elements, where participants used drawing, photography and writing to share their experiences, memories and aspirations. As part of my methodology, I collaborated with three refugee families and two artists from ARC studio to create Refugee Stories – Education: Obstacles and Aspirations to share research findings beyond academia through a creative medium. The characters in the comic book represent real people sharing their lived experiences.

I am currently a research fellow in education in emergencies at the Centre for Lebanese Studies, University of Cambridge. During my fellowship, I want to continue sharing my PhD research findings with educators, refugee people, policymakers and relevant organisations.

If you would like to speak to me directly, please get in touch with me at jn473@cam.ac.uk, jafia.camara@bristol.ac.uk or LinkedIn.

I would like to share the comic with school teachers, including EAL and ESOL specialists, school leaders, and college and university lecturers, to find out how it could be helpful to their practices in classrooms, schools and colleges more widely. For example, the comic book could be part of an educational activity where refugee voices could be amplified when discussing issues of migration and displacement, integration, school-home communication, language, poverty, education & technology, access to the curriculum and knowledge(s) that may be privileged/excluded from the curriculum. What discussions can be raised with students and colleagues focusing on the themes that emerge from the comic book? What are the implications for practice and policy?

I invite you to read the comic and use it in your practice. You can use this Padlet to share how the comic can be helpful to you and how you have used it in your practice.
