In order to win the Vietnam war they knew they were going to have to hide because the USA was bigger and stronger than them. So the north vietnamese dug 10s of thousands of miles in tunnels to better supply and protect themselves. soldiers used these tunnels for multiple things including houses of troops, transportation, lay booby traps and mount surprise attacks and then after disappear underground to safety. To counter these tactics america and south vietnam trained many soldiers to be "tunnels rats" to navigate tunnels and detect booby traps and troops underground.

Communist forces were digging a series of tunnels underneath the forest terrain. Tunnels were often dug by hand so it took a while. As the Us gradually raises there troops input north vietnam, north vietnam rely more on there tunnels for protection. At the tunnels peak they had somewhere between 225 - 250 kilometers in tunnels. while america relied heavily on attacking from ariel the tunnels gave north vitaman an advantage. The Cu Chi tunnels came to the point where they were holding an whole underground village including living quarters, kitchens, ordnance factories, hospitals and bomb shelters.

War in the Cu Chi Tunnels

In addition to providing safety for the vietnamese, the Cu Chi tunnels served a key role in during combat operations including a base for the communist and attacks against nearby Saigon. VC soldiers lurking in the tunnels set numerous booby traps for U.S. and South Vietnamese infantrymen, planting trip wires that would set off grenades or overturn boxes of scorpions or poisonous snakes onto the heads of enemy troops. To combat these guerrilla tactics, U.S. forces would eventually train some soldiers to function as so-called “tunnel rats.” These soldiers (usually of small stature) would spend hours navigating the cramped, dark tunnels to detect booby traps and scout for enemy troops.

I picked the topic because I thought it was very smart that the cummiost made tiny tunnels for only there small soldiers to go through I also thought that the development of the tunnels were really cool too. They went from tiny tunnels for only booby traps and for safety to run to after an attack, to full civilization underneath the ground to be protected from the bombing above.
