Beneatha isn't worried about what people think about her. She wants to be a doctor, and she's a strong, independent woman. Beneatha believes that a woman should do what her heart desires and not "what it says in all the novels that men write." They're more than what they say, and Beneatha doesn't want to be like that. This poem relates to the character because it's explaining you can break down the person, do anything to them and they still rise and continue to fight. In the 50's, African Americans were seen as people who didn't deserve to be there. They were treated very poorly, and yet they still made it to this day. This is how I feel Beneatha was like.
