Normal sinuses are lined with a thin layer of mucus that traps dust, germs and other particles in the air. Tiny hair like projections in the sinuses direct and sweep the mucus toward small openings that lead to the back of the throat. Sinusitis causes the hair like projections to get clogged up with infections or allergies and block the small openings to the throat. This causes the mucus to become trapped in the sinuses.
