This was my first film for Aice Media Studies. We were assigned to make a 3-5 minute movie in a group. My group consisted of a total of 9 people. We all had our parts in the movies and we all worked together well. This movie had things my group liked, disliked, and things we thought could be better.

Starting off, we had a certain amount of time to complete this movie which wasn't enough for us to get some clips/shots we wanted. We could have worked on getting better and different angles. This will be something we can do better next film in the future.

Moving on, another thing is that we didn't like how long the intro to the movie was where there was a long pause in the title screen. The whole goal of this was to add extra time to the movie and have anticipation. This obviously didn't work and was unnecessary by being too long.

Last off, we edited sounds into clips of the movie that were unnecessary and didn't fit in as well as we thought they would. One thing though that we liked was how we set up our end credits with editing.

Genre And Representation Reflection

All the movie genre's that were covered in my class were Action, Adventure, Animation, B movies, Biopic, Comedy, Crime, Documentary, Drama, Family, Fantasy, Historical, Horror, Indie, Musical, Mystery, Romance, Sci Fi, Sports, Superhero, Thriller, War, Western, and YA(Young Adult). We studied the conventions, codes, and audience expectations of these genre's such as setting, characters, lighting, editing, special effects, emotions, and camera work. For each genre we watched and studied three movie clips from different time periods. Some of these clips were from movies that are hybrids, hybrids are a blend of two or more genre's in one movie.

Subsequent to talking to my group we discussed about how our first film and we said it was a hybrid of crime and drama. Our second film was also a hybrid between horror and comedy. For conventions we had our main character hiding in the background during most of the film. For Codes we had a lot of POV and tracking shots to make it seem more intense and feel like your actually there. We made the audience feel anxious because we didn't know a lot about the stalker until the end of the movie and at the end of the movie he attacked the girl. We did break some Conventions and codes such as when it came to knowing the characters we were very vague, we also didn't use that many different types of shots such as close ups and other camera work common in drama and crime. Codes for a second movie were more diverse compared to our first film where we had close ups, wide shots, tracking, medium close ups, and establishment shot. For conventions the main character represented greed and and bad intentions which caused him to turn evil and eventually be defeated. Audience expectations for this film when it comes to emotion there are lots of scenes that the audience can laugh about. Codes, conventions and audience expectation we broke were a lot of our shots were over exposed overall and there isn't that much emotion to feel while watching the film.

When it comes down to all these genres I have to say action is my favorite genre. If I could make a movie about this genre it would probably be a hybrid of adventure and action where a group of people go deep into the woods where they find a door in a big tree that doesn't end from the sky. When they enter the tree they get sent flying into the air out of space into this whole new world where they are stuck on until they find someone who needs their help with a evil man who has taken over the world they are in. The person they find gives the gear that will help them defeat the evil man and once they defeat the evil man they will be able to go back home. I would use a lot of tracking, close up, wide shots, and others to fit in with the action scenes that happen in the movie. I would also use different types of lighting depending on the mood of the scene in the movie. I want the audience to feel anxious and excited while watching the movie. This is my pitch for a film I would make for action.

Editing and Sound - Midterm Film

In November and December of 2022 we learned editing, sound, and screenwriting/screenplay format. We studied film and editing concepts and created documents containing over 20 types of editing techniques. We also watched a documentary called "The Cutting Edge" which is a film on editing and use of color. We also watched "Making Waves" which is a film on sound. We also read the screenplay for "The Incredibles" to learn more about scripts and created our own screenplay using Arc Studios. This month we were tasked with making a 2 minute horror/horror hybrid about someones nightmare.

Our movie had to be a horror or horror hybrid film. It would not be a full film but a opening with a minimal dialogue and mostly music and sound effects. We also couldnt have long takes and had to start the movie in black with out company indent and title with optional credits which would then cut or dissolve into the film. We also need a minimum 3 cuts between the actor and nightmare and the entire movie had to be filmed, written, and uploaded by the student. The film must also has to include one close up, one dutch angle, one high or low angle, one low key light set up or one silhouette, one pan or tilt or track or push or spinaround, one zoom or dolly zoom, one subliminal cut or multitake or smash cut, one match cut, one J cut or L cut, one use of slow or fast motion, one intentional use of color for story/emotion, one instance of intentional use of costume/hair/makeup, one instance of visual complexity in setting choice (color, texture, depth, lines, shape) three sound effects, one piece of incidental music or one sound motif repeated three times. For extra credit we could include quick cuts, montage, wide establishing shot, split screen, POV shot, reflection shot, and other types of shots and graphics.

I fit into horror conventions by basing the film on a nightmare/ fear about a person getting a grade that they weren't satisfied with. We broke conventions by using lots of bright and overexposed shots, on the contrary to underexposed shots. My film represented a person that wanted a excellent grade and got a less than desired grade.

Our piece was successful in the way that we were able to show the actors true emotion inside and feelings when he turned into a clown. Although I think that one thing that didn't work for us was using overexposed shots which took away the feeling of anxiety and unease. We used Arc Studio for our script, Capcut for our editing, and music and sound effects we found on youtube.

Two Minute Film Opening

1. A one or two sentence description of the first two minutes. What happens?

Get out starts with a tracking shot of Andre walking down the street in a lowkey light setup and a car passes by him, and he is abducted.

2. What is the genre and who is the target audience for this film?

This film is made for teens and young adults to enjoy because of how it presents itself as a horror movie with other strange themes.

3. Describe the opening credits and title sequences, including any company logos or idents. When do they appear? What color/font are they using? How does it "align" with the opening of the film? Anything else you notice?

The indents used are the classic universal one and the Blumhouse Productions indent which features a green toned haunted house opening to the logo and quick pans to show other parts of the scene.

4. Describe the sound -- a "sound by sound" analysis of the entire first two minutes.

The first couple minutes of the movie are very quiet until Andre is grabbed where music starts to play in the background and the audio volume ramps up.

5. Describe how you felt at the end of the two minutes. Did you want to know more? What was left hanging, if anything? What questions do you still have?

At the end of the first scene, I was kept wondering why Andre was abducted and who did it which led me to want to see more of the movie.

6. How would you describe the editing style in this clip? Any particular editing techniques you noticed, or length of shots?

The camera movement is very smooth and clean throughout this first part to show a sort of calmness until he is abducted.

7. How did these first two minutes adhere to conventions?

These couple of minutes adhered to horror conventions with low key lighting and a "jump-scare" when the man grabs Andre. The low volume that ramps up also helps support this.

8. How did these first two minutes break with conventions?

One of the conventions that were broken is that music is not typically played during a sudden intense moment.

9. How did these first two minutes represent social groups or people or issues?

These first two minutes try and set the scene of how the rest of the movie would play out.

10. Why do you think this film was originally distributed in the way that it was?

I think that this movie was distributed by universal because universal saw a small movie with a low budget that they could profit off of and try and grow Jordan Peele's brand to have future collaborations.

She wanted to use plenty of match cuts that use music and movement for a clean finish. She also wanted the lead actor to really show indifference to their actions, even though the main character is committing very serious crimes.

Independent Distribution and Marketing Plan

1. I would contact Blumhouse Productions about getting our film shown in theaters. Blumhouse specializes in horror and thriller films, which matches the genre of our film. They have distributed films such as Get Out, The Purge, Halloween, and The Black Phone. They produce “high quality indie budget horror films.”

2. The title of our film is Clean Kills. I think our title works because it fits the description of what happens in our movie. I don't think it could be improved.

3. A tag line for our poster could be Stay Clean.

4. The target audience in this genre is people who like horror. The age and gender of the target audience is young male adults. This target audiences level income and education level is not important. This target audiences interests could be skateboarding and other thrilling hobbies. Something important to them is gore when watching movies they like.

5. If I had to self distribute this film I would advertise this movie online and also in the real world. Some places I would advertise online are YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. These are all platforms that the target audience we chose are most likely on and would most likely click on the ads. Some places that are in the real world that I would advertise this movie are the mall, the beach, skate rink, and plazas. These are places I would distribute my movie because these are places that the target audience we picked are around.

6. I would engage the target audience online by giving money or some type of reward to the target audience for a certain amount of times repost/retweet/ share and forward my ad.

7. I would design my movie poster by adding three main colors to it, adding the characters onto the poster, big bold fonts and etc. I will design the poster to make it familiar and fresh by making it similar to other bigger movies posters. Characters would be in the foreground and in the background would be characters who have died. I would use big bold fonts to make the title pop.
