"So part of him wanted to tell Nath that he knew: what it was like to be teased, what it was like to never fit in. The other part of him wanted to shake his son, to slap him. To shape him into something different. Later, when Nath was too slight for the football team, too short for the basketball team, too clumsy for the baseball team, when he seemed to prefer reading and poring over his atlas and peering through his telescope to making friends, James would think back to this day in the swimming pool, this first disappointment in his son, this first and most painful puncture in his fatherly dreams".

Her parents thought that since she look the least Chinese she wouldn't be racially isolated but was wrong.

The book is a interesting book, it tackles ideas such as racial isolation, loneliness, and secrets. Lydia is the least Chinese and they believe this means she will live a better life but it is the opposite. Lydia is the glue of the family because she has the least Chinese feature. The rest of their children are neglected which is awful. I wish the father paid attention to his other kids, given the fact that he has been racially isolated, but instead further his kids insolation by only loving Lydia.
