FL24 EDU 515 Week 5 Media Literacy Discussion by Lindsay Uhlmeyer

As an introduction to media literacy, I have included two examples of commercials that aired during Super Bowl XVIII on January 22, 1984. The first commercial was for the Pinellas County (Tampa, FL) Board of Tourism and the second one was for Apple. The viewing audience at the time had no understanding of how the difference in these two commercials would change the advertising connected with future Super Bowls to come. View these two example videos and then watch the short documentary about the Apple commercial that follows: Pinellas County Board of Tourism Commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2uKZNRPDMsApple 1984 Commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zfqw8nhUwAThe Real Story Behind Apple’s Famous 1984 Ad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsjMmAqmblQ Now that you have seen an example of how media can impact culture and society, I would like you to research and locate an example that relates to your own curriculum and that is appropriate for the grade level and subject area that you teach. For those of you who teach a variety of grade levels or subject areas, such as a K-12 content area or special education, feel free to focus on a particular grade level/subject area if that makes this easier for you.
Choose a Medium: Decide on a type of media to explore. Options include:
Movies
TV shows
News Stories (audio, video, or print)
Images
Commercials
Advertisements
Podcasts
Books
Once you have found an example, post the image or the link/video, etc. here in the Padlet. Below your included media example, include the information below.
Reflect on Positive and Negative Impacts on Society and/or Culture: Think about how the larger population viewed the media.
Reflect on Personal Impact: Think about how the piece of media made you feel or changed your perspective.

Nike is known for having dynamic advertising campaigns, and this one from the Super Bowl is certainly no different. This particular advertisement has world class athletes from all over the globe performing at their best. The Nike advertisements have inspired generations of athletes since its inception in the 1980s. The goal is for normal people to see the athletes in their Nike gear, and make them want to wear them too. However, in the last couple of years, Nike has leaned heavily into politics, causing many to boycott the brand for taking overtly political stances. Personally, this particular advertisement takes me back to my youth when I was inspired by professional athletes to become one myself. At the time, I thought if I wore the gear, I would play like the pros. This, of course, is not the case as it takes much more than that to make the big leagues.

This Hershey’s commercial is very inclusive and made me think about how to include and understand other people. In the commercial, a boy is eating a Hershey’s bar and is practicing how to use sign language to ask a girl if she likes chocolate bars. He then asks the girl in sign language and she responds that she loves chocolate bars in sign language. I believe that this commercial can get people to think about how they can include others and make them feel good by simply learning how to communicate with them. I work in special education and this is what seems like a constant issue for my students. A lot of my students have a hard time communicating even if it is with their AAC devices. We have had classmates of students with AAC devices use the students device to ask the student a question instead of speaking to make the student feel more included. I have also worked with individuals who use sign language as a primary source of communication. It means a lot to them when people make an effort to understand them and use their language. I don’t think that there is any negative impact of this commercial. It is used to show the world that we can communicate with others and learn how other people communicate. I often worry that my students aren’t going to be able to communicate with others or be understood outside of the classroom environment. This commercial made me feel like there is hope for my students out in the community.

Commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8G9lzFJfzo

It shows the negativity and reaction people get when they see an action from others that is in their eyes foolish or wrong. At the end of the video it shows that while the man lost money, he made others smile by small acts. He made the world a better place with the small acts that he did. For me personally it impacted me because the world is and can be such a cruel place with many aspects that are not things that we like to see the reality in. If this one person can make that big of an impact maybe the way in which we view others and society should change which would allow a better tomorrow for more people.

The documentary titled "The Atomic Cafe" presents various clips from film and interviews created during the early years of the Cold War when atomic weapon development was escalating and the Red Scare was in full effect. No additional voice-over commentary is given; the only spoken dialogue comes from the original sources and music from the time period. In spite of this lack of direct commentary, "The Atomic Cafe" still manages to be transformative in its underlying implied messages and allows the viewer to reflect upon the material in retrospect. It gives a timeline of changing perspectives, ranging anywhere from celebration from having harnessed the power of the atomic bomb to dread of the potential of Soviet usage of that same weapon. Many find the documentary to be stunning in how it reveals the norms and mindsets of the time period being presented and how propaganda manipulated these perceptions. I think a scene near the end of the documentary is what truly leaves an impact on me. An atomic bomb is dropped, and as it is falling, we see people using the duck and cover method. After some time has passed, the bomb detonates with catastrophic affects. It feels so ruthless in its presentation; there is no winner in this situation. Nuclear warfare only causes destruction.

There are a couple of examples of book trailers that could be used as an introduction for different books in a literature class. These trailers are actually pretty neat. I'm not a huge historical fiction reader (although I'm getting there) and these trailers make me want to run out and grab the book. I think that students will see them and will have the same reaction. It is so much more gripping than just telling them about the book that I want them to read. And with all of the students addicted to the memes and video shorts, this should be something that they can really relate to. I don't see many negatives here---maybe that you now are seeing the character as the actor/actress and not how the author describes them. But I do think these would be super helpful to get groups to pick and read for their book clubs.

Diabetes is a condition that can be incorporated into my biology course through study of homeostasis and blood sugar. This Mounjaro commercial from Superbowl 2023 uses actor who look upset, worried, and concerned until start taking the medication when they appear happier and healthier. The ad has fine print saying the medication is not for weight loss, but a few seconds later in bold red letters it displays that study participants have lost up to twenty-five pounds. The way the advertisement uses emotions and facial expressions and then emphasizing some points and minimizing details with fine print is purposeful to mislead the general population. Watching this video people may assume the medication can fix their diabetes and even lose weight. This causes a perception to be that individuals must have a medication to treat diabetes even though diet and exercise are appropriate first steps for disease control. On a personal level, I am skeptical of medication advertisements and feel that it is inappropriate that pharmaceutical companies advertise directly to consumers. This leads to individuals asking and sometimes demanding doctors give prescriptions particular medications instead of allowing medical professionals to make appropriate decisions on what is the most beneficial treatment plan. It also pushes the narrative that medications are always the answer and that personal choices do not play a factor in health.

This video always shows my students that no matter their age they can still do and reach amazing goals. The students always beg to watch more Kid President videos. Watching these videos even as adult always set me on the right path of remembering why I am a teacher and why the job is so important. For the students they always say that the video makes them want to work harder. I know I have talked to others who have seen these videos and we see a cute little kid who wants to make the world a better positive place.

I feel like this commercial that Sharp Calculators puts out represents change in our society and culture. The commercial represents stopping the pollution of paper and taking up time that it takes to do math in our daily lives or work. This was a a handy tool to have but also came at an expensive price for the time. This was a great step for new technology in the 70's. making the lives of workers and businesses more efficient is what I think the population viewed this media as. This media made me feel as though we have things so much easier now even with the new technology that we have. Although this is quicker and more efficient for them, we have made calculators easier to access and quicker/ more efficient. Paper pollution is still an on going factor today but I could only imagine how much this has changed.

I chose this commercial as it relates to the study of Newton's laws, which we cover in Physical Science. There were several of these commercials featuring the crash test dummies Vince and Larry. Despite many new safety features in vehicles, the crash test dummies emphasize the importance of using all of the safety precautions available to avoid legal penalties and to save your life and the lives of others. I think the tagline: "You can learn a lot from dummies" tells the viewers that you can learn from others' mistakes and save your life. I like that this commercial used some humor to portray a serious topic, I think that it helps to draw the audience's attention. However, it still gets the point across that vehicles are dangerous and we must use all safety precautions, all the time, to stay safe.

This movie would be a great way to discuss the impact of business decisions on society.

Positive impacts "The Social Dilemma" made were that it increased awareness of the dangers of social media and misinformation.

This video is one that I love to show my first graders about half way through the school year when everyone is over school and need some more encouragement.

This could help students in PE. The negatives of this could be its one opinion of sportsmanship and this is a very subjective topic that could take many different forms.

This piece of media definitely gave me a perspective on sportsmanship from a child who would be around the age of my students. This helps me see it from their point of view and what good sportsmanship may look like for them.

The movie "The Social Dilemma" is a documentary that focuses on the impact of social networking and how media companies manipulate user behavior to increase their profits. This movie would be a great way to discuss the impact of business decisions on society.

Positive impacts "The Social Dilemma" made were that it increased awareness of the dangers of social media and misinformation. It also encouraged mental health advocacy by highlighting the impacts of social media on our mental health, especially teens.

A negative impact the film may have had is that it has made us more paranoid about our online activity.

I definitely became more aware of my social media usage after watching this movie. I now look at these apps more like advertisements as opposed to a fun way to take up my time.
