The Loggia Square isn't dedicated to a famous person, but to the loggia palace.
It was made in 1428 to give a new building to the citizens. It was made by Filippo Grassi Milano, born in half of XV century and died in Brescia after 1516. He was a sculpture and an Italian architect. From 1493 he started his work of erection of the Loggia palace, while it seems that it was his career. On November of that year he received a nice sallary of 277 lire, for a supply of stones, then on July 1494 he receives 40 duchies for the transportation of a facade column

HISTORY Piazza della Loggia was designed in the middle of the Renaissance period, and towards the end of the fifteenth century the construction began.

The square immediately became the beating heart of the city both for its position and for the presence of the Loggia, begun in 1489 under the direction of Filippo Grassi and completed in 1574, which will become the seat of the city's administrative life over the years.

All around the square are buildings of the sixteenth century in clear Venetian style, quite modest in style, but with a strong visual impact, while in front of the Loggia, on the eastern side, we find the arcades also in Renaissance style surmounted by the "Clock Tower" ", named after the presence of an ancient clock from 1546.

The "talking statues" Edit

The square hosts three of the four "talking statues" of Brescia, a group of sculptures of various ages on which the Brescians used to post anonymous messages containing criticisms against the rulers. In particular, under the arcade of the Palazzo della Loggia is located the Lodoiga, sculpture dating back to the second half of the sixteenth century. This statue, placed in direct contact with the square, was considered by the Brescians as "spokesman" of the complaints of the people, who expressed their criticism through tickets and sheets glued anonymously on the statue itself or on the wall adjacent to it. The two "macc de le ure", called Tone and Batista, were placed at the top of the Clock Tower to counteract the Lodoiga. Given their location, above the square, the city government was considered patriotic, in open contrast with the Lodoiga.

Palazzo della Loggia descrizione
The Botticino white marble facade is vertically composed of two distinct architectural sections. In the lower section, completed in 1501, there are a series of columns and pillars that support, interspersed with plumes hosting the important cycle of the thirty Caesars, twenty-four of which sculpted by Gasparo Cairano, the main architect of the Brescian Renaissance sculpture, while you are Tamagnino. The large arcades of the open gallery, with a square layout, are open on three sides of the building. The second level, corresponding to the late sixteenth century of the construction site, houses large pilasters adorned framing large windows arranged in series, in correspondence with each arch of the loggia below, and covering all four of the facades of the building.historic!!

The second level, corresponding to the late sixteenth century of the construction site, houses large pilasters adorned framing large windows arranged in series, in correspondence with each arch of the loggia below, and covering all four of the facades of the building.
The square as well as for the architectural beauty and for the role certainly central in city life, has become sadly famous for the massacre that on May 28, 1974, during an anti-fascist demonstration, killed 8 people and wounded 102 others.
