Children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) have difficulty in communicating with others. This can include saying that they want to, understanding what is being said to them or they do not understand the social rules of communication.
This area also includes children and young people with ASD, including Asperger's Syndrome and Autism (see next column).

Support for learning difficulties may be required for children who learn at a slower pace than their peers, even with appropriate differentiation.
Learning difficulties cover a range of needs, including moderate learning difficulties (MLD), severe learning difficulties (SLD) and profound multiple learning difficulties (PMLD).

Specific learning difficulties (SpLD) affect one or more specific aspects of learning. This encompasses a range of conditions such as Dyslexia and Dyscalculia. This also includes Dyspraxia (see physical and sensory section).

Children may experience a wide range of social and emotional difficulties which manifest themselves in many ways. These may include becoming withdrawn or isolated, as well as displaying challenging, disruptive or disturbing behaviour. These behaviours may reflect underlying mental health difficulties such as anxiety or depression, self-harming, substance misuse, eating disorders or physical symptoms that are medically unexplained. Other children and young people may have disorders such as attention deficit disorder, attention deficit hyper-active disorder (see next column) or attachment disorder.

The Rise Crisis & Home Treatment team (Coventry & Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust) provide multi-disciplinary support to children and young people (under 18s) who present in mental health crisis.

We assess those who are:

an immediate and significant risk to others due to their mental health
being considered for admission to a mental health inpatient unit
at risk of immediate and significant self-harm
in acute psychological or emotional distress that is causing
them to not be able to go about their daily activities, such as going to school and looking after themselves

These difficulties can be age related and may fluctuate over time. Many children and young people with vision impairment (VI), hearing impairment (HI) or a multi-sensory impairment (MSI) will require specialist support and/or equipment to access their learning, or habilitation support.

A parent doesn't need the school to be able to apply for an EHCP assessment. You can apply yourself if you disagree with the school's assessment that the threshold isn't met.
