The primary emphasis is on audience and performer interaction as well as audience to audience connection. The ideology that ‘audience is performer’ they should be welcomed to contribute as theatre is a form of play, which highlights and builds uniting and creative sense of community.

Community and social engagement are lacking in todays society. We must use theatre to bring people together, showing and encouraging them to question, explore imagination and most of all play.

Concept - Home Show

A theatrical Home Show focused on bringing drama and performance out of the well rehearsed, silent and strictly obedient theatres. The Home Show will engage an intimate connection between audience and performer whilst further improving social engagement and wellbeing through audience to audience interaction. The concept embraces a 'slice of life' approach and the entire house will act as the setting for the performance. A 50 minute experience, including a 30 minute compilation of three scenes from HDWAFIHH will run between all rooms of the house and audience are free to move or sit wherever, as they will add to the performance by being characterised as other house mates.

Subtly artistic and community orientated the Home Show will also serve a meal and allow BYO alcohol. This concept helps to activate multiple senses, such as, touch, sound, sight and taste. Food and comfort connects to an intimate and welcoming experience.

The Home Show will provide two types of audience connection; performer to audience and audience to audience. The interaction of swapping and creating outfits establishes an actively creative and socially playful experience between audiences. They will also have the opportunity to keep their costume from the performance. Leaving them with a memory connection, a lasting reminder that can be repurposed as a new outfit.

Audience members can further achieve and engage a connection with the performers as the immersive and intimate setting forces a deep audience to performer connection. Also, the audience will be treated as minor characters, being treated as other housemate. This offers a completely new experience and erases the usual line that divides audience and performer.

The Home Show has themes of community and shared-experienced styled theatre, supporting the audience and their critical role in performance work. The Home Show will also experiment with Bertolt Brecht’s idea of “the audience as having their own aesthetic” (Heim, C. 2015). As this ideology expresses the importance of the collaborative relationship, authentic and immersive process that performance theatre presents.

Audience - Who and Why?

Intimate and immersive theatre will attract a wide audience. Simply because the show will be set in a share house, there will be an immediate audience sold with the venue. Regular theatre goers, friends and family along with a smaller crowd of people who are interested in trying something different will also be expected to view the show. The venue can only hold a small audience (15-20), however, this is a crucial and individual concept to the House Show. Wide, dark and empty theatres struggle to develop a personal and deep level of active connectivity. Shane Pike theories’ “there is a sense of inclusivity and a desirable element of shared-experience at the center of the theatrical performance” (2019). Therefore, practicing and focusing on shared and collaborative techniques, the performance can represent a full on accurate representation of theatre home teachings.

The Home Show is an exploratory, site sympathetic landscape. The performance will be created to work in a standard share house but won’t respond specifically to the individual history of the house. This maintains the opportunity for the show to travel and highlights the significance of the story and overall atmosphere rather than unambiguous and unrelated details of the location. There are risks and restrictions, as with any performance space. The tight, closed space and multifaceted performance requires audience members to ensure their own responsibility of safety and the safety of others. Plus, the enjoyment of others. Consideration and respect will be required and expected from audiences, to allow the overall cast and participating audience to achieve a successful show.

Similar to the Home Show, Punchdrunk work with immersive audiences, travelling shows and invading unusual spaces. They inspire the use of well-known and constructed texts, fracturing their narratives to mask audiences with artistic moments of innovation. Punchdrunk treat their spectators as invisible, following the Stanislavskian ‘circle of attention’ with its ‘solitude in public’. Punchdrunk believe letting audiences explore and actively examine with the possibility of invading performers space can help “accomplish the complex job of telling and inhabiting a story” (White, G. 2019).

To heighten the collaborative, active and creative experience the audience are encouraged to wear costumes or outfits that they feel comfortable not getting back.

This idea of swapping costumes at the beginning of the performance, creates an audience to audience connection. Making people feel safe, comfortable and confident in a space is crucial to successfully receiving their immersive input. Addressing new strangers and forming a sense of group connectivity will allow to 'cut the tension' changing the small and very intimate space to feel welcoming.

The activity can help the individual evoke a new sense of self, further encouraging them to positively and actively engage in the rest of the performance. Confirming that who they are in 'normal' day to day life is different to who they are at the performance, essentially creating them a character.
