Summary: Located in South Dakota, Wayne Westerberg(pg.16), remembers about Alex or also known as McCandless. He picked him, while he was hitchinking, and offered him to stay in his trailer (pg.17). Candless stayed for three days, later offered him a job if he was to ever be in Carthage (pg. 17) again. He took the job, left once he found out he was arrested. Westerberg discovered that Alex´s real name was Christopher. Christopher gained a degree from Emory (pg.20) college in history and anthropology

Analysis: After reading I ask myself why he left alone to the Alaskan wilderness. He himself was a smart person though he didnt value himself.

His coworkers and bosses recall him as a diligent worker and a loner with peculiar behavioral traits including a hatred for socks and an inability to detect unpleasant odor. At least one uncomfortable interaction with a coworker results from his odor. McCandless kept his status as a nomad without a house or access to shower facilities hidden from his coworkers, according to Krakauer.

Analysis: throughout this chapter, i noticed that chris often tends to run away from his problems. he does not like to face them and would rather run away from them.

#runaway #idontlikepeople

Summary: In November 1992, Jon Krakauer visited Carthage, South Dakota, to meet Alexes buddy Wayne and some of Wayne's family members. Alex described him as a hard worker who, despite this, would tell others that he lacked common sense and "wasn't what you'd call mechanically inclined" (p.62). Alex planned to "divorce" his parents and never speak to them, he said (64). Despite his mood swings, Alex would have been described as "the life of the party." "If you don't hear from me again, just know you are a great man," the chapter finishes with postcards mailed to both Westerberg and Jan Burress the day before Alex set off on the stampede track.

Anaylsis: We often tend to not meet anyone who can have a huge impact on us.

#meetingnewpeople

Krakauer begins the chapter by describing Davis Gulch, a watershed in the middle of the desert in the Southwest. The Anasazi people created petroglyphs in Davis Gulch, as well as a carving left in 1993 by Everett Ruess, a young man who, like Christopher McCandless, vanished into the woods. After that, Krakauer tells the story of Ruess' life, including the trials and tribulations that led him to Davis Gulch, where he left a final inscription of his name before vanishng. Ruess was born in a middle-class family in Southern California in 1914.Ruess's lack of concern for personal safety is linked to McCandless's, according to Krakauer.

Analysis: A new man was found in the woods.

Summary: Jim Gallien, saw a front page news-story New York Times (pg. 98) about a boys death. Gallien thinks he knows the identity of the body, so hed calls the police. He convinces the police that he had an encounter the dead hitchhiker. He told police that McCandless was from South Dakota. A friend of Wayne Westerberg (pg. 100) hears a description of Chris McCandless. He calls the Alaska State Troopers (pg. 98). Wayne has McCandless social security (pg.101) number which turned out to be genuine and placed McCandless´s permanent residence (pg. 101). They then find out the Chris McCandless had a brother who was named Sam McCandless. Sam was 9 years older, he had seen the article prior before. He stated that it never occurred to him that he might have been Chris. Sam and Chris did not really know each other since Sam moved to Atlanta for college (pg.101). Sam had to go to Fairfax County Police Department and there he was given a photograph of the hiker, which he then knew it was Chris. Same drove out to Maryland to tell Dad and Billie that their child is dead.

Analysis: I think that it is crazy how they had to go through multiple people to find out who the hiker really was.

Summary : 53As his parents worked together to develop a satellite systems consulting company, Christopher McCandless grew up in an environment of thriftiness and aspiration. Camping vacations, which may have fostered Christopher's love of the outsides (pg.113, helped him relieve the tension. Christopher's paternal grandfather's passion for camping and rock climbing (pg.114) may have also played a role. Carine and Christopher were talented musicians who adored the family dog. McCandless also raced cross country and had a strong desire to achieve in all of his endeavors. Anecdotes from his classmates reveal his disdain for his parents as well as his conflicting unwillingness to protest. On the family's land, Christopher also covertly harbored a homeless man. The McCandless family was well-off. For example, as their company grew, Billie and Walt McCandless were able to retire (pg.116)

Anaylsis: Although it seems like Chris did not have a good childhood, this chapter says otherwise.

Krakauer provides a series of anecdotes in his hunt for the rationale for McCandless's foray into the woods. McCandless makes a long journey through the American West after graduating from Woodson High School (pg.117). He gives his father an expensive present (pg.117) before he departs. He calls home infrequently while on his journey before completely losing contact. Just before he starts college at Emory in Atlanta, he returns haggard and bearded. McCandless will start college the following week, thanks to his parents' efforts. He gets good marks while working for the student newspaper. However, he starts to fall apart and becomes antisocial. McCandless' transformation is shown by the narrator. During his journey, he learned that his father had kept up a relationship (pg.123)with another women.

Anaylsis: I wonder if Chris knew about the other family which is what caused him to never really care for his family. He decided to summit the Devils Thumb, an exceedingly challenging peak in Alaska, as an avid climber. He drives to Washington State and then takes a salmon boat north, where he observes a caribou swimming a mile from shore in the Bay of Alaska. He arrives in Petersberg, Alaska, and spends the night on the floor of a woman he meets outside the local library (pg.137).Three days later, he arrives at the Devil's Thumb's edge. A snowfall begins as he climbs. Before making it to a glacial plateau to camp, he nearly falls through a crevasse. He is concerned that supplies he has scheduled to be sent by plane will not arrive and that he will die of starvation (pg.140. His meals is delivered by plane in the morning.

Summary: Krakauer returns to his tent, disappointed that he failed to reach his aim of summiting Devil's Thumb. He sets fire to his tent, vaporizing one of the walls to the point that the temperature inside decreases by 30 degrees. Anyway, this makes him reflect on his motivation for fleeing to climb: his volatile (p. 147) relationship with his father! They have a relationship that is quite similar to Walt and Chris': the father is obstinate, mistreats his son, and pushes him away with his medical school expectations (p. 148) because he is a doctor. He repairs his tent by filling it with snow and devises a strategy for starting his final ascent on the mountain's southeast side, which is slightly "easier." He summons all of his courage at sunrise, and after conquering all of the terrifying (p. 150) challenges, he finally reaches the summit - YAY! He takes a moment to take in the scenery, snaps a few photos, and then begins his descent. He tells a few people what he did when he eventually makes it off the mountain. They're not overly impressed. Years later, while writing this book, he learns that his arrogance (p.155) pushed him to his boundaries in order to achieve his goal, but that the impact his death would have had on those he loved would have been catastrophic.

Anaylsis: I wonder if Chris would have liked or felt the same way Jon felt.

Summary: Jon goes back to his old story names Odyssey (pg.157). It goes back to when Chris hitchhiked his way up to Canada to meet up with Jim Gallien. He spent days with Stuckey, giving out his ideas about living off land. Gallien picks up Alex outside of University of Alaska. No one knew about Chris´ whereabouts since he only wrote them on his notebook which he took with. Along the Stampede Trail, he followed the Teklanika River until he came to the "magic bus," which he died in on May 1st. Chris chooses to pack up and return to civilization on July 3rd after reading a piece from Tolstoy's "Family Happiness" that addresses how true happiness must be shared with others. When he returns to the Teklanika, however, the river has become inaccessible due to the snow melt; the water is too deep and the current is too fast for him to cross. Chris hoofs it back to the bus, depressed, isolated, and alone (p. 163), to wait for the high waters to drop so he may cross safely.

Anaylsis: I wonder if Chris did all of this to himself. He knew he could have gone back to the real world, but instead he chosed to go into the wild.

#diary #onhisown #crazy

Summary: Jon Krakauer, Roman Dial, Dan Solie, and Andrew Liske, follow in Chris´ footstep along the trail. These four men have a map (pg.173) unlike Chris. They find a cable car within 20 minutes away from where they were across the river (pg 1.73). In retracing Chris's steps, the men discover that he shot a moose, not a caribou, as many Alaskans assumed. When the men arrive at the bus, they search the inside, discovering several of Chris' belongings, including his jeans, a homemade belt he made when he became too slim for those jeans, his nail clippers, and his hiking boots. The men are startled by this because they believe they are trespassing on Chris' final resting place. They spend the night camping outside the bus because no one wants to sleep inside due to the creepy shroud of melancholy created by Chris' death. They discuss Chris's need for this spiritual quest (p. 184) and go down the boss movements he made as well as the gigantic mistakes (p. 185) that ultimately led to his demise while sitting around the fire. The men all think that Chris is a reflection of themselves, and they respect (p. 181) his desire for adventure.

Analysis : I questioned myself on why chris did not take the map. Did he at one point come across to the map but just ignored it? He would have been a great idea to at least put the map in his backpack.

#takethemap #carflying #footsteps

Summary: Chris returns to the Magic Bus on July 8th after failing to cross the Teklanika River. He decides he'll just wait it out till the flood recedes. Chris underlines many sections in Doctor Zhivago that all relate to a note he scribbled in the margin: "HAPPINESS IS ONLY REAL WHEN SHARED." We are led to conclude that Chris wishes to reintegrate into society and share his life with others as a result of this. Mother Nature, on the other hand, has other ideas. He writes an unsettling entry in his journal on July 30th, explaining that he is in horrible shape: he is weak, famished, and in grave danger (p. 189). This is where things start to get a little muddled. There are three plausible reasons for his rapid and dramatic demise, all of which include poisoning (p. 191): 1. He became so hungry that he ate moldy seeds he bought from South Dakota that had turned deadly 2. He ate poisoned potato seeds, and he ate poisoned potato seeds, and he ate poisoned potato He threw his plants off and ate sweet pea, which is high in toxins (p. 193).Choice #3 appears to be the problem, and because he is already underweight (p. 199), his body lacks the fat and energy needed to fight off the harmful side effects of eating the sweet pea plant. He becomes crippled and is unable to hunt or gather as much as he needs to obtain the weight and stamina needed to combat the toxicity of the sweet peas. Chris thinks the end is near after a few weeks of tough physical decline, so he shoots one last selfie while holding a card with the following message: "I'VE LIVED A BLESSED LIFE AND THANK THE LORD FOR IT. THANK YOU AND MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL" (pp. 199-200) Chris died on August 19, 1992, 112 days after starting his adventure and only 19 days before the six people met up at the bus in early September.

Analysis: Chapter 18 to me was one of the best and saddest chapters ive reen throughout the book. Chris was able to enjoy his last few moments doing what he loved the best.

#allover #livehowyouwant #enjoylastmoments

Summary: As twelve months pass, Walt and Billie has finally gone to visit the resting place of their son, Chris. Ms. Bilie has seemed to be calm and centered (pg.201) unlike Mr. Walt. Walt and Billie wanted to visit by taking the Stampede Trail just as Chris had done it, but they ended up taking a helicopter instead. They visited all the stops in which Chris stopped by. As they made their way, they encountered the magic bus in which he lived in. Mr. Walt installs a memorial (pg.202), with a few words to his son. They see some of his possessions, and they encounter a message on the wall. Ms. Billie then leaves a suitcase stocked with first-aid kit, canned food, and other survival supplies (pg.202). Along with that she leave a note urging (pg.202) to those who follow in Chris´ footsteps saying, ¨call your parents as soon as possible¨. Billie says its comforting knowing that her son, Chris´ was here spending time by the river. Both parents admire Chris for what he did. As they leave and get on the helicopter, they say the bus remains is ¨visible among the stunted trees, a tiny white gleam in a wild green sea, growing smaller and smaller, and then it´s gone¨. (pg.203)

Analysis : It hurts to read how both Chris´ parents go and visit their sons final spot. No parent should ever have to do that, especially wanting to take the same trail he did. Chris will always live.

#Chrisforever #travellikechris #livelikechris

Summary : We found the truth about what murdered Christopher McCandless in this piece. Chris has spent his entire life gathering and hunting game. He died after inadvertently eating the potato seed (pg.205). Jon had discovered that the seeds were poisonous, and Chris had died as a result. Those seeds, according to Jon, would have killed Chris regardless of how long it took. Jon had sent those seeds to a lab and paid roughly $20,000 out of his own pocket to figure out what had happened to Chris. The seeds, according to Krackeur, contained a substance called L-canavaine (pg.207). The seed, it turned out, contained a chemical (pg.207) that would emerge during the winter to defend itself from people eating it. It finally became poisonous as a result of this. Jon Krackeur ultimately discovered out what caused Chris' death after running labs and conducting research. He also emphasizes the importance of being conscious of what we eat. Finally, he claims that Chris would have made it through and survived the wild if he hadn't been debilitated (pg.210).

Analysis : Crazy to think that Jon did not give up and wanted to know what caused Chris´ death. Now we have to be aware of the things we eat because we never know what type of chemicals can be inside of them. I would have like to have read a longer version of ¨into the wild¨ and see what type of crazy experiences Chris´ encountered.

#longlivechris #livelikechris #intothewild

Chris had his great Alaskan odyssey and Krakauer climbed the Thumb, my greatest goal would to be able to travel and visit Bahamas, Hawaii, Cancun. I would like to go to places where high views, water and amazing sunsets are located. I enjoy spending my afternoon watching sunsets go down and being able to smell the water and feel the breezes. I usually go every weekend to watch the sunsets. My furthest place that I have gone go to Puerto Vallarta. The sunsets there were just mind blowing. To include that every afternoon when sunsets would happen the sunsets were different color ! Puerto Vallarta just amazing, I would definitely go back and enjoy every sunset that happens.

My odyssey in the future would be to have a book collage of all the sunset pictures I have take of different places I have travel to. Looking later in life I would appreciate the work I have done to be able to travel and work on what my biggest dream would be.

#LIVEnow #getupandLIVE #APPRECIATESUNSETS

Summary: In the beginning of the book, I never really understood why Chris McCandless did what he did. We know that everyone is different and do different things, but traveling up to Alaska and going through what Chris did, never really made sense to be. Along the way by reading the book, my feelings about how I felt were changing because I understood why Chris did what he did. Although I disliked the facts that he never really did a proper goodbye to his family and the fact that he never really let anyone help him along the way. Chris is inspiring because I don´t think anyone would have done what he did. I personally would not have done it. Towards the end I felt a guilt of sadness because he died alone. Overall, I enjoyed the book and look up to Chris.

#livelikechris #travel #dowhatyouwant.
