The students have never completed a scheme of Health Related Physical fitness, but will have some knowledge on the topic. Some of the students are involved in sports outside of school, and will have gathered some knowledge on the topic through this. Others have already begun using the gym. The majority of students should have some bit of knowledge on the topic from everyday life, as well as what they have learned about the cardiovascular and respiratory systems in science class

As a class, this group of students get on very well and can be quite lively and energetic. They are not disruptive, but if their energy is not managed and channelled correctly, they can stray from task very easily. One student makes a lot of excuses as to why they are unable to do a certain task and takes any opportunity to sit down in the class. When explaining to them that they will be doing this scheme, they were very enthusiastic and offered numerous suggestions as to what we could do throughout this scheme, and seemed very excited at the prospect of learning about health and fitness related activities, particularly resistance exercises and boxercise.

Rationale for Selection

There are a number of reasons why Health Related Physical Fitness has been chosen.

Coláiste Choilm have a skeleton scheme outlined for each year. In keeping with this scheme, HRPF is the next topic which is to be covered.

First of all, there are enormous physical and psychological benefits associated with exercise. these include improved sleep, improved cardiovascular fitness, an increase in self esteem and a reduction in anxiety levels, as outlined by Luttrell & Chambers (2013). Students will learn about the steps needed to keep themselves fit and healthy, not just now but for life. The Healthy Ireland Framework for Improved Health & Wellbeing 2013-2025 states how "physical inactivity is estimated to be the main cause for apporximately 21-25% of breast and colon cancers, 27% of diabetes and approximately 30% of ischaemic disease burden". Therefore, it is important that scheme is used to give students the tools that they can use to stay physically active throughout their lifespan, in order to prevent such illnesses.

On top of this, the World Health Organisation, taking part in physical activity "discourages the use of tobacco, alcohol and drugs, helps reduce violence, enhances functional capacity and promotes social interaction and integration". This scheme of work will provide students with the opportunity to learn about this.

Finally, the primary aim of this scheme is to get the students as active as possible. The 2006 Health Behaviours in School Children survey found that by age 15, "almost nine out of 10 girls and seven out of 10 boys don't achieve the recommended level" (Luttrell & Chambers, 2013) of physical activity. This is the same age that all these students will be by the end of the year, ao it is vital that they are given the tools now to be able to continue to be physically active going forward.

Each class will begin with a ‘7 minute workout’. The aim of this is to settle the students down before siting them down in front of the learning wall, as they can be quite energetic and hard to settle down at times. The students will then be introduced to the learning outcomes of each class, and told why we are doing what we are doing in the class. There will then be a quick warm up and dynamic stretch before the main body of the lesson begins. For any classes that involve resistance exercises, the students will be shown the correct technique before commencing, and task cards will be left at each station with the key teaching points on them. Each class will take place in the hall, as the outdoor facilities are not suitable for weight training, nor is there a suitable area for a learning wall. At the end of each class, students will conduct a full body stretch. They will then be brought back to the learning wall for a discussion on the class just completed. Students will also keep a physical activity diary each week, which will be reviewed throughout this scheme. Many of the lessons are also dictated by what the students would like to do to help them achieve their fitness goals
