One theme is "Man against Nature." Throughout the whole book, Daniel is fighting the elements of nature to survive, from the weather to figuring out how to provide food on an island which seemed like, at the beginning, had no resources. It seems like once he had conquered one obstacle, another came up. Another theme is "Man against Himself". Daniel was ready to give up many times because life was just so difficult and he was tired of trying so hard. He was so afraid that he would be on this island forever, that he even thought of ending his life! But each time, hope won out! He survived despite everything he had to overcome. I was amazed at how positive he was. For instance, Nikki just started a new school, and she is trying to fit in, but it has been a little hard. There are these mean girls, and all Nikki feels like they want to do is make Nikki's life horrible. Mackenzie, one of the mean girls, was throwing a party, and she said to Nikki, "Like I would invite you?!  Aren't you the new girl who hangs around my locker all the time like some kind of creepy stalker?"  But in the end of the book, Nikki learns to just roll with it, and not to worry about it because she has her own set of good friends.

She also has to keep the cooking secret away from her parents, and if I set the kitchen on fire, or had to keep it away from my parents, I'd so just quit cooking forever. (At the same time, I don't like cooking at all, so it has no affect on me, but if I did, if it was like soccer is for me, I wouldn't quit.)

So far what I read Arthur was standing were Mr. L. Prosser wanted to build his bypass. But Mr. L. Prosser builds his bypass, they would have to take down Arthur's house. So Arthur kept on standing in the way. When Mr. L. Prosser told him to get out of the way. This means Arthur was very determined.
