The segment of the song I chose begins slower and builds in intensity as the song progresses. To portray that in my artwork, I wanted to depict figures of strength in the midst of tranquil, muted scenery. The figures are all in poses that reflect strength and confidence - some feelings that come to mind when I listen to this song. The painting is simultaneously peaceful and energetic, reflecting the melody and rhythmic pulse of the beat. I chose to leave textured brush strokes because I felt it was representative of the layered sounds in the song. Multiple pitches and tones overlay one another, so I decided to layer several shades of color to demonstrate a cohesive, yet independent, collection of various tones. Lastly, I balanced muted pastels with stronger shades of browns and grays, as a means of portraying the contrast of sounds in "Caitlyn." The song begins with softer sounds but ends with additional electric, sharp notes. I initially drew a 3x3 grid and placed the figure, as well as the hand, on the upper cross sections of the grid. This allows the viewer to perceive the composition as a whole, rather than solely focusing on one element. Additionally, I took away from the handout the idea of incorporating drawn symbolism throughout the composition to balance the overall piece and cause the viewers' eye to bounce amongst the various elements. The chain links and the incorporation of pink achieve this balance.
