Rhyming words and counting to 100 for kindergarten to multiplication facts for 3rd grade. These quick assessments can be done almost anywhere at anytime; morning greetings, waiting in line to go to recess, as they are dismissing at bus call. It helps utilize every minute of the day. Teacher must take time to look over and answer the students questions or use the responses to form small groups that still need specific instruction. Student pairing could also be formed from this assessment to allow students to help each other.

This can be done whole group, small group, or individual. Students will each individually roll the dice and respond to a corresponding numbered prompt. Teacher should allow students to share something that is still "fuzzy" even if that is not the number they rolled. This can be done orally or written depending on the time and subject.

Students answer a quick question about any subject the teacher chooses. They post their answer on the board or a chart with a post it. The teacher can then assess if the students are understanding the content for the day or specific lesson. This would be a good use for a subject that includes a transition out the door to lunch, specials, recess, or bus dismissal. It could be a simple math problem or short response to a reading passage. The board could be partitioned into student numbers or the students can be directed to put their name on the post it.

Kahoot is a fun interactive way to assess what the students have learned. Each student or group of students will need a device. The teacher can ask questions and assess what the students have learned in a game like fashion. Essentially it is an online multiple choice quiz. The owner of the session will have the data available to them. One way I would utilize this would be for Science or Social Studies to review for an upcoming test.

A one on one conference is an excellent method to assess your students. Attention needs to be placed on an individual student and a specific skill the teacher is trying to assess as well as a goal the teacher and student set. Conferencing is mostly done with reading and writing to discuss where the student is and where they aim to be. This can be done with math skills as well. With such little free time in the day, a teacher must be intentional about setting time for this.

A reading running record is an accurate way to collect data and assess your students. This one on one assessment will give the teacher the students reading level. This includes rate, fluency and comprehension. This should be done often to collect data on students progress, at least quarterly. Teachers can then decide what teaching points the student will benefit from and teach these in small groups such as guided reading or skills group.

Students will respond to a prompt or question on any given subject. This integrates several subjects into one assessment. You will tell the child how much each word is worth. For example each word could be worth 25 cents and they have to create a response that adds up to $2.00. The dollar amounts can be changed depending on the grade level. The responses can vary depending on the students level of thinking. This would work best with an open ended question.

This is similar to a ticket out the door. At the end of the lesson students write one thing they learned or liked about the topic. They include their name and crumple the paper up. The class then tosses their "snowball" to the front of the class. After that, students are called up to pick a snow balls and read what a classmates wrote. The teacher then collects the papers. It is a quick fun way to have students share information with their peers. It is also useful because the teacher can use the data to assess how the students understood that lesson. Of course, expectations will have to be set on how to throw the snowballs.

Although worksheets are not ideal, using them as a quiz can be a formative assessment. They can be given after a few lesson throughout a large unit to make sure the student are understanding the concept or information. The teacher can use this to see what needs to be cover again either whole or small group. A quiz could be used for a grade or simply to see where the students are. It is good data to have available if requested by parents or administration.
