5G is an example of social change that is happening all over the world. It will change our way of life and as stated in the chapter, "social change is sometimes intentional but often unplanned" (Macionis p.489). This video mentions several ways that 5G will benefit society through medical and agricultural advancements. "Industrial societies actively promote many kinds of change. For example, auto manufacturers seek more efficient ways to power our cars, and advertisers try to convince us that life is not complete without a 4G cell phone or some other new gadget" (Macionis p.489).

I chose this image because Harry Styles and many other celebrities have been using fashion as a way to end toxic masculinity and challenge gender norms. In an interview with Vogue, Styles shares, "Clothes are there to have fun with and experiment with and play with. What’s really exciting is that all of these lines are just kind of crumbling away. When you take away ‘There’s clothes for men and there’s clothes for women,’ once you remove any barriers, obviously you open up the arena in which you can play." Our textbook explains that "fashions reflect basic cultural values like individuality and sexual attractiveness...Therefore, a fashion becomes a more lasting part of popular culture" (Macionis p.492).

3. Structural-Functional Perspective: Modernity as a Mass Society

This article shows how the modernization of our society through the use of social media has had both positive and negative consequences. "The face-to-face communication of the village was eventually replaced by the impersonal mass media: newspapers, radio, television, and the computer-based social media that link people throughout the world" (Macionis p.502). Social media has weakened our traditional social ties and is "leaving individuals to feel socially isolated" (p.502).

This picture represents how our modern society has resulted from the growth of capitalism. Jeff Bezos as we all know is the founder of Amazon and he is one of the richest people in the world today. "A capitalist culture seeks to improve health through advances in scientific medicine rather than by eliminating poverty, despite the fact that poverty is a core cause of poor health" (Macionis p.504). Bezos would have a huge impact if he would use some of his money to help fight homelessness or poverty but he choses not too. In doing so, class inequality continues to grow.

5. Symbolic Interactionist Perspective: Modernity and the Individual

From a symbolic interaction perspective, society affects us all individually in different ways. Modernity helps shape our identity but for many they are left feeling like outsiders. "Mass societies are quite another story. Socially diverse and rapidly changing, they ofter only shifting sands on which to build a personal identity." (Macionis p.505). This begins to weaken traditions and cultures leading to people looking to others for approval, looking to fit in anywhere in society like "a chameleon changing its colors to match its environment".

This cartoon depicts how the modernization of our society has brought on new issues that we didn't see coming. The modern world has brought us to a new standard of living but has also failed in fulfilling the prosperity and well being of our world. "Science has failed to solve many old problems (such as poor health) and has created new problems (such as pollution and global warming)" (Macionis p.508). This Postmodern era is allowing for more focus on issues regarding the state of the natural environment, social justice and animal rights.

This video shows how the IDA (International Development Association) is making efforts to help those in the poorest countries get through the Covid-19 pandemic. "In the past, the entire world was poor and that technological change, especially the industrial revolution, enhanced human productivity and raised living standards in many nations" (Macionis p. 509). These technological advancements are things that those in poor countries do not have access to. The U.S can help poor countries develop their economies. "Industrial nations can speed development by exporting technology to poor regions, welcoming students from these countries, and providing foreign aid to stimulate economic growth" (Macionis p.509).
