Based off the lyrics of the song, it is tackling the issue about how people that do not even know each other can still hate each other. It is talking about how prejudice against someone can cause hatred for them without even knowing them, even though they are all just people.

This song is still relevant today in modern society because there is still prejudice and unjustified hatred towards a group of people without really knowing the group. Minorities often have stereotypes associated with them and many times people have prejudice against them.

Images of war in the video
Prejudice is also used in war to justify the war.

War is fought between competing groups because each group wants something for themselves. Because each group wants something for themselves, there are conflicts between each group and they try to fight for themselves. However, these conflicts can help one side but can hurt the other.
Power is often associated with war as many times war is fought to gain or show power. However, wars are also fought for many other reasons like hatred for others.
Rebellions occur also because a group wants something for themselves that they don't have or they are dissatisfied with something. Usually, rebellions are on a smaller scale than wars but they are still both conflicts between groups.
Within wars and rebellion, there are always people that aren't directly involved but still get thrown into the conflict. Because of this, they would need to find ways to get through and survive through the conflict. Sometimes, however, to survive, some people need to rebel rather than conform to the population.
Education relates to these as with more education comes more power and sometimes, more education can lead to conflicts because of differing ideas but other times, it can lead to agreement because they now know more to agree on things. However, education is much less important to the government than the military, especially in America.

The message of the song is say how there is little love left in the world with so much racism, brutality, violence and terrorism in the world, especially in the US.
This relates to war as war is another part of the violence that hides the love of the world. They describe the suffering that people go through every day, especially due to the wars going on. They also describe how war and all the violence is trying to be hidden, along with how they try to glorify war to make it seem much less violent than it actually is. They even say in the song, "Nations droppin' bombs / Chemical gases fillin' lungs of little ones" depicting how war affects the world.
They also try to say to unite others regardless of culture or ethnicity to be able to bring more love to the whole world, especially since they describe how they only have one world we all live in together.
There is also ideas of demonizing others to make them seem like the bad guy so it makes it easier to kill others.
They try to show how these all happen in every country in the world, not just one. Because of this, it shows how we are all similar to each other and we need to unite to each other.
Similar to All Quiet on the Western Front as it shows the side of the Germans and how they are similar to us.

War

Animal Farm relates to war as there was fighting between the Animal Farm and the farms surrounding it. The Animal Farm represents the communist USSR and the fighting is to prevent the same from happening to the surrounding farms as they don’t want to animals to cause a revolution and make the farm “communist.” They also fought amongst themselves (the pigs) so they could gain absolute control. However, animals aren't aware that they are gaining control except Benjamin the Donkey. Benjamin doesn't do anything about it b/c he is apathetic and he pays the price through Boxer. From the beginning, they never got freedom b/c the pigs were the first to take the milk and they kept on gaining power. They were the first to educate themselves too and others are overworked.

Survival

In the Animal Farm, anyone who opposed the leaders and Napoleon got killed by the pigs and their dogs. So, they realized that to survive, they would need to just obey what they say so no one ever questions what they say anymore and they just blindly listen and obey for fear of their survival.

Rebellion

The animals in the animal farm didn’t like how they were living and how they were living under the oppressive humans so they held a rebellion to overthrow them and have the animals run themselves. This relates to the Russian Revolution and how they overthrew the other government.

Power

After they rebelled against the humans, the pigs started quickly rising to power because they were smarter than the other humans, despite the fact they were supposed to be equal. Eventually, the pigs had enough power that they received almost all the resources while the other animals were oppressed and worked even harder than they did under the humans.

Education

The animals all tried to get an education but some were smarter than others so they were able to learn more quickly than others. Because of this, the pigs who were the smartest were able to use that education so that they started gaining more and more power because the others were uneducated. They keep the other animals under control by lying and other methods. After that, they used the dogs as fear to keep them under control and then finally kill them.

Allegory of Russian Revolution

Fall of tsar + rise of Stalin

He describes how the world is all suffering, especially due to this violence. Instead, he suggests that the people of the world should come together and stop fighting to "heal the world" and be able to end suffering through this. This message is further emphasized with the images shown on screen where children run into the areas of violence and all the tension eases up in those areas. They also use children because children are innocent and don't know as much so they are better able to defuse the tension.

In this new camp, she has less privacy due to everyone sharing a room due to its small size.
She drops out of school at 8th grade in Syria but she regrets doing this because she wants to further her education and wants to be able to use that education to take care of her siblings by teaching them.
War has changed her thinking b/c it changed her reality but it is difficult to see how she can change her situation to come true.

The message the song is trying to convey is that in order to try to make a change in the world, someone first has to embody the message they're trying to push on to everyone and once that is done, then change will be able to better happen. He accompanies this message with images of the song of injustices happening like with world hunger and racism around the world. He shows that if we want to correct those injustices, we need to do something about it by starting with ourselves first by using multiple images of one person that was able to make big changes.

Just like Remarque in All Quiet on the Western Front, they just want other people to be able to get a different view. She accounts her life in Syria where they are constant bombings, so much so that she is not even fazed by them anymore. Along with that, she describes how two of her friends were killed in a second during a shooting while they were just in 7th grade.

Final Reflection

Before this unit, I already knew how war was an awful and gruesome thing that shouldn't be glorified like it usually is. However, after reading All Quiet on the Western Front, I realized it was much harsher and more gruesome than I originally made it out to be. The novel highlighted the sacrifices they had to make along with all the experiences they went through on the front during war. The novel made me have even higher respect for soldiers that fight in these wars. Along with this, All Quiet on the Western Front and Animal Farm both highlight the problems with authorities and having power. All the higher-ups are the ones who are fighting for something but the common people are the ones who suffer because the common people are the ones on the front fighting to represent these higher-ups. With more power comes more ability to control people under them and make them do whatever they want them to do, leading to the ability to abuse the power. This was especially highlighted in Animal Farm with the abuse of the pigs' power over the rest of the farm animals. All my life, the importance of education was emphasized to me. However, I never realized how lucky I was to be able to receive this education as many other places do not get the same kind of privilege. I also understood how education often allows one to gain more power as shown in Animal Farm but this is not always the case as shown in Persepolis where uneducated people have power. Instead, they try to limit the education of others so that they don't rebel as well as try to repress them using loyal supporters and watching every aspect of people's lives. Along with this, Persepolis and Animal Farm have rebellions in it which match my ideas of rebellions before which is that it is lead by the population to have a new style of government or big change. However, I did not consider how the new government could be just as bad or even worse than the original until I read the novels. Survival also plays a central part in everything we have learned in this unit. It has a relation to all parts of war, rebellion, power and education. I knew the importance of survival and how difficult it was from my understanding of war and the turmoil countries go through. However, I never realized the gravity of the situation in war and in countries with turmoil until after this unit where I was finally able to see from the point of view of the people and citizens that live in these countries and how much they have to face on a daily basis compared to my life here which also puts into perspective how lucky I am to be here.
